Hello!

Looked at the various other 1850 Salamander lists on the forums and thought the list below was different enough to ask for opinions. Would like feedback on my flavor of a Salamander list, as I tried to bring at least 1 tool for every job.

HQ:
Vulkan Hestan (Purpose: melta re-rolls of course, add to Sternguard flamer squad and to provide some CC ability)

Elites:
1st Sternguard Squad (Purpose: horde/light infantry killer, anti-Sv 3 infantry, Sgt with PS to assist in CC ability, jack of trades)
9 total in squad (10th slot for Vulkan)
2x Heavy Flamers
2x Combi-Flamers
1x Power Sword
Drop Pod

2nd Sternguard Squad (Purpose: tank killers, jack of trades)
10 total in squad
2x Meltaguns
3x Combi-Meltas
Drop Pod

Troops:1st Tactical Squad (Purpose: Scoring, horde/light infantry killing, general support)
10 total in squad
1x Flamer
1x Missile Launcher
Rhino

2nd Tactical Squad (Purpose: Scoring, Secondary anti-tank, horde/light infantry/hvy infantry killing, general support)
10 total in squad
1x Meltagun
1x Multi-Melta
Drop Pod

Scouts (Purpose: Back field support, scoring, anti-specialist, anti-high Toughness)
10 total in squad
10x Sniper Rifles

Fast Attack: (Purpose: Anti-Air, Anti-Light Vehicle, Anti-MC, general support)
1st Stormtalon Gunship
Typhoon ML

2nd Stormtalon Gunship (Purpose: Anti-Air, Anti-Light Vehicle, Anti-MC, Anti-Sv 3 infantry, general support)
Cyclone ML

Heavy Support: (Purpose: Anti-Tank, anti-MC, anti-heavy infantry)
Devastators
6 total in squad
4x Laz

Thunder Fire Cannon (Purpose: Anti-horde, general support)

I tried to tool every unit with a primary task in mind, then secondary tasks in support of other units. Depending on positioning of the opponent, the Sternguard units would drop to destroy primary targets, with the Tactical Squad with the Rhino (combat squaded if needed) moving up to support at the mid-field. The Rhino would also be used to put a search light on an optimal target during night fighting for long range support. Melta tactical would either deploy in the second turn where needed, or held back starting on the board in a fortified position. Scouts positioned in fortified backfield positions. Devastators, TFC providing long range support where needed. Flyers for primary AA. I expect the flamer Sternguard unit to be at the highest risk for CC, therefore I'm hoping Vulkan and the PS Sgt can help that squad hold their own.

Current setup totals at 1847 points.

How well in general does this list deal with shooting type armies? With rushing CC armies? Recommendations for different equipment options? Is it worth including a dedicated CC unit? Anything else in general to comment on?

Thanks for the feedback!

hello mate! like u, i've tried to make a good salamander list with Vulkan.
Reading your list, i tought a few way to improve it ( always IMO )

Vulkan: good with anti-infantry sternguard.

Anti-infantry sternguard: with special ammunition this squad is already an absolute killer against infantry. I think you put too many flamers here, i'm sure you know that vulkan already add a heavy flamer to the mix himself. my tough is: drop all combi-flamer, or all heavy flamer and maybe add another combi-flamer, in either cases drop the power sword ( or at least, if your target is "anti-horde", use a power maul, but IMO you sould simply drop it), for me, the best configuration is to drop the combi-flamers, 3 heavy flamers will absolutely kill any non 2-3+ save unit that isn't a MC, and you can always fire them... you could also consider to drop 1 heavy flamer...

Anti-tank sternguard: maybe 5 twin-linked melta shots are overkill here, maybe drop one combi-melta, but if your purpose is to combat squad after drop-pod and kill 2 tanks, this is a very good combo.

for the troops, personally, i'm a huge fun of the scouts in land speeders storm configuration. U can equip it with a heavy flamer and let all scouts shoot, or you can outflank them and move 30 inches to grab objectives. Or you can start on the board and go to kill scoring enemy units, what about heavy-flaming and then reducing to WS 1 them and then assaulting with 15 str.4 that hit on 3+? ( always if you equip scouts with pistols and close combat weapons and if the enemy don't pass the blind test ), you could also consider to give a combi-weapons to the sarge, with it's BS of 4 and master-crafted and the maneuverability of the storm, you can easily pop a tank. this combo costs 100 points, 110 if you also get a the combi-weapon.
My ideal configuration is to take 2-3 of these units, but i you really want the tactical squad, i suppose that 2 storm-scout and 1 tac-squad for guarding home objective, maybe with a lascannon, isn't too bad.

for stormtalon i would take skyhammer over cyclone because i think it's overpriced, but i can see its utility in anti-MC and light vehicles duty.

for heavy support thunderfire cannon is good. maybe consider to take 2
regarding the devastators... you want to use them as monster/tank-hunters, right? since you use Vulkan, why you don't consider to take a 5 man legion of the damned squad, fully melta equipped? 1 multimelta, 1 meltagun and 1 combi melta, all twin-linked and ignore cover with more accurate deepstrike... i think this configuration really shines in salamander drop-pod list.

the list would seem like this:

HQ: Vulkan/anti-horde sternguard 190

Troop:
3 scout squads of 5 pistols+ccw/ bolters scouts in land speeder storm with heavy flamer/heavy bolter ( it's better the flamer if you ask me ) and cerverus launcher: 300, 330 if you give combi-weapons

Elite:
1 anti-horde sternguard (9x) in drop pod ( 1-2 heavy flamers ) 253-263
1 anti-tank sternguard (10x) in drop pod ( 2 meltaguns and 2-3 combi meltas ) 275-285
1 squad of legion of the damned with multi-melta, meltagun and combi-melta: 155 ( you could also drop the anti-tank sternguard and take 2 of this squads )

Fast support:
2 stormtalon with skyhammer or typhoon: 250 for skyhammer or 290 for thypoon

Heavy support:
1-2 thunderfire cannon: 100-200 points

total: min: 1523 max: 1713

I like the look of the list. Looks pretty all-purpose, plenty of scoring units.

Issues I see: You're SOL against flyers if you roll poorly on reserves. Possible idea is to make the Devs all with Rocket Launchers and Flakk missiles instead. You'll lose killing power against Riptides and slightly against Wraithknights (only thing with high enough toughness to matter) but against the other types of MCs, S8 AP3 is plenty. 4 S7 shots at BS4 often leaves at least a glance against AV12. And it also makes the squad capable of going anti-horde if need be.

Means TEQ will be more of an issue, so keep that in mind I guess.

I'd also take a power axe/fist on the Sternguard Sgt. with Vulkan over a power sword. If someone assaults the unit and issues a challenge, having a guy who can potentially kill Sv2+ guys trumps a Power Sword any day of the week. You've already got Vulkan to be your challenger against anyone in just power armor.

Thanks for the comments on the first list I posted! Gave me some ideas for follow up lists that I would like reviewed. Just FYI, so far playing with the original list, I have been able to net a total of 4/5 wins (not a large sample size I know). Of those, in a recent tourney, got 2/3 wins and 3rd overall out of 10. I feel like the core of the original list would be an excellent foundation for further tinkering, hence the lists below. I have another bigger tourney next weekend with 50 people, so I'm hoping the dakka community can help me towards the path to victory! I'll provide notes for each list for the reasoning for my changes.

This list brings in some AA for the first turn, mainly to deal with FMC.
List 1

HQ:
Vulkan Hestan (Purpose: melta re-rolls of course, add to Sternguard flamer squad and to provide some CC ability)

Elites:
1st Sternguard Squad (Purpose: horde/light infantry killer, anti-Sv 3 infantry, jack of trades)

This list explores replacing the Devastators with the lascannons with Landspeeders with Multi-meltas to take advantage of Vulkan's ability. I also gave the melta Sternguard a L-C (would only get 2 attacks on defense anyway) and Tactical Sgt's combi-weapons to double the specialist squad's damage output. Includes List 1 AA ML/Flakk
