Bit of a basic newbie one, but I can't for the life of me work it out. Can anybody tell me why some pre-selected skills on the character sheet will have a blank Basic square followed by a filled in Trained square? I can understand a filled in Basic & Trained square, but why a blank one?

Wouldn't that be because its a specialty sort of skill, and not a basic one but rather one that needs training?

Edit: ADVANCED SKILL! I stumbled to my bookcase and got my book. Advanced skill was the word I was looking for, not specialty. I imagine that something like Tech-Use would easily have one in Trained but none in basic, because without the training you will not be able to do it (right? Or is it you can try it but it is at half the relevant stat? My memory, she quails in the face of beer).

Simple way to look at it is that Skills come in four flavours:

Trained Basic - Can be used at any time.
Trained Advanced - Can be used at any time.
Untrained Basic - Can be used, but with penalties.
Untrained Advanced - Cannot be used. You must be trained in an Advanced Skill to use it.
