After a lengthy break from competitive wargaming, my brother and I travelled down to Bournemouth to take part in Breakthrough Assualts' (http://www.breakthroughassault.co.uk) Late War Flames of War tournament.

After a really enjoyable 4 games, in which I managed not a single victory, and finished with the wooden spoon! We headed back to frozen north (Aberdeen) with a renewed hobby impetus. I decided my US 3rd Armoured tank company wasn't cutting the mustard and that a new list/army may be on the cards. With Martin's SS-Kampfgruppe Peiper not fairing that much better, we decided to eBay our forces and start afresh!

Being a fan of the Band of Brothers series I have a few platoons of the 101st kicking about, coupled with a few support options. After a wee bit of research I managed to settle on a Market Garden themed 101st airborne, supported by British tanks from the 11th armoured (as they appeared in the TV series).

After twisting Martin's arm into a German list from Bridge by Bridge, we ordered up the rules compliment and a few boxes from Plastic Soldier Company, and set a date for our forces to be ready for, 26th April, in time for The Art of War tournament, in Derby. (http://www.the-art-of-war.co.uk). Which we will be sorting tickets for once we have got off duty sorted.

The list I am looking at so far is:

Parachute Rifle Company HQ (101st)
2 Cmd Carbine team
30points

Combat Platoons

Parachute Rifle Platoon (101st)
1 Cmd Rifle/MG team
1 Bazooka team
1 M2 60mm mortar
6 Rifle/MG team
265 points

Parachute Rifle Platoon (101st)
1 Cmd Rifle/MG team
1 Bazooka team
1 M2 60mm mortar
6 Rifle/MG team
265 points

Weapons Platoons

Parachute Machine-gun Platoon
1 Cmd Carbine team
8 M1919 LMG team
170 points

Parachute Mortar Platoon
1 Cmd Carbine team
4 M1 81mm mortar
1 Bazooka team
145 points

Support Platoons

Armoured Platoon (11th) (Confident Veteran Allied Platoon)
3 Sherman V
1 Firefly VC (late) with .50 cal AA MG
380 points

Armoured Recce Platoon (11th) (Confident Trained Allied Platoon)
3 Cromwell IV
220 points

Airborne Anti-tank Platoon
1 Cmd Carbine team
4 M1 57mm gun
4 Jeep
140 points

Parachute Field Artillery Battery
1 Cmd Carbine team
1 Staff team
1 Observer Carbine team
4 M1A1 75mm Pack howitzer
135 points

Company Points: 1750 points.

Comments and criticism appreciated.

I do own a Grasshopper air observation post and another full platoon of paratroopers along with bazookas and a few spare tanks that could be swapped in, and I may look at picking some extra stuff up too.

Once I get the additions I will start posting some pics of the force. Also going to pick up some of the 4Ground terrain, did get to see some of it when in Bournemouth, which looked awesome. Will get some pics of boards and battle reports up once we start get games on the go.

Currahee!

The 101st. is one of my favorite forces to pay,Your list looks good.Maybe try one of my favorite units out.Jeep divisional recon, non armored, recce save plus recon move.Works great for Flanking moves.I have given plenty of medals to my squad for destroying 88 batteries. If you allow it i like to use General Taylor. He allows Spearhead, use this with Smoke and Truscott,Somebody will be in trouble and also do not forget your pathfinder for your reserves deployment.
Just a suggestion on the units ,they are some of my favorites out of the 101st. list .I started with PAras but now have moved on the playing 327th. Glider riflemen,The Glider infantry or as we like to call them Air Assault.
now, i have a question for you, what do think of Market garden American Glider useage for reserves.but with a may not assualt rule ,limiting them to not be able to assault for the first action of the unit or perhaps two.Shock of landing and bailing from glider?
We are soon to be starting are open Lw 45' Med. Island hopping and Italy campaign with alternate timeline being used .What we are wanting to do is have some good old Boys from the States,101st. airborne. vs. Axis,Guido and HAns.RSi Para Italians and Fallschirmjagers.Run it as a take and hold mission for a mountain top, possibile Airstrip objective, also a V1 and v2 sites. game with Paras and Glider reserves.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I am tempted certainly by the Jeep Divisional Recon, I do have some spare Jeeps, so will give it a try in a game, see how they do. I will need to add another pack or two, because I only have enough for a minimum platoon.

In terms of General Taylor, i had had a look at his rules, but at 60 points I was struggling to fit him in. I have just been using easy arm until the books turn up, so once they have arrived, I will have a better read through his bonuses and see if he can be fitted in. Although in reading the book of the tv series, it would appear that Winters isn't his biggest fan, so I may have to leave him out!

As for the Glider's question, I will have to read about them in the book and let you know. The campaign sounds great, are you going to be using the Italy books, I saw that they had some campaign ideas and the like in the Battlefront spotlight.

Italy was another theatre we were looking at, but on the current book, we couldn't find the lists that excited both of us.

Last time I took my 101st out with british support to a tournament I took 1st place. They're a lot of fun and brutally tough.

The Cromwells in the list, are fantastic at moving across a board at speed, if you can collapse a Flank or find a way through Cromwells can rampage across the back of a board taking out Artillery etc, getting rear Armour shots. They are not good in Tank on Tank battles, so I just keep rolling forward at speed 16" is one hell of a movement distance, and if you can double to a secure position where the Enemy have to move to get at you, or cannot shoot at you, it's an even bigger bonus, because suddenly they have this small unit deep in their terrority they have to deal with.

On the subject of Jeeps are fun but really expensive, just like a Wehrmacht Aufklarung list, you need like 30+ 250's and they cost a fair bit and you haven't even put the infantry down.

I have 28 Jeeps, and a load of CWT's. all told I must have blow £100+ just on the vehicles a combination of BF a Forged in Battle and Sky trex Para passenger models.

I roll as Freddie Goughs Jeep Squadron when we play market Garden. So I have jeeps towing 6pdr's, CWT towing 17lbs, and a couple of Para Platoons in Jeeps. It's very fluffy, but not particularly effective, but fun in a multiplayer game of like 6000pts per side.

Any Paratroopers are going to be awesome in defence if dug in, and they are awesome in assult to, the US Para's can really pour out the firepower too!

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest!

That Cromwell idea is a good idea,Have them move in backing up the jeeps and have the jeeps dismount ,when the cromwells arrive to secure the objective.especially if you use the Engineering jeeps.

I do love the idea of the Cromwells, their speed will be a very welcome addition to a rather slow moving force. The last list I was using was mainly tanks and a few half tracks, so I'm a bit unsure of how I will take to an infantry heavy force. Especially where digging in seems to be essential.

I have taken some jeeps to tow my 57mm guns, which I forgot about, so I would need to get a few jeeps on top of them anyway! It may be a platoon to play around with and see where I can shave off the points.

I got the excitement of my first order arriving today, my first batch of plastic soldier company models. I was amazed at their speed, only ordered Thursday at 00:10!

On top of those pictured were the 11th Armoured Decals set, which should hopefully add a lot to the finished models.

Hopefully the books will arrive tomorrow!

Sad times...unfortunately I can't get the time off work to attend The Art of War. So back to the drawing board in terms of an event to attend.

On the more positive side I have now build the whole army and sprayed the first infantry platoon, so hopefully some pics in the next few days.
