Hello all.

I have a bit of a nonstandard list post that might be a bit of a challenge. I hope this is the correct place for it.

First off I will admit I only have Space Marine armies. Dark Angels, Space Wolves, and Iron Hands. I enjoy the fluff and will probably never stop adding to them. However I would like to start an army with a different look, so no Space Marines, Grey Knights, Chaos Space Marines, or any other army that might make use of the Rhino Hull. Any other army suggestions are welcome.

Now on to the part that makes this a list thread! The challenge; I'd be really appreciative if anyone willing to respond to this would make a Single Force Organization army list for me. Not entirely based on points but if they had a spending budget of $400-$500USD. A semi-competitive but mostly fun list. Any and all play styles are welcomed. Along with the army list, a short explanation why you like the army you have posted. The goal here is to get input on a variety of armies from people that have played them. While at the same time knowing what to buy.

Next the details. No Forge World at least for the purposes of this endeavor. Any combination of standard kits and Battleforce boxes is great, I would be ordering any/all prospective items from my Local Shop, I like what they do and want to support them. They sell all their 40k items at 20% off the Games Workshop retail listed on the U.S. GW website. So everyone is working with the same numbers. No need to worry about taxes or any other factors that would increase the price. As that will be covered in addition to the budget.

For those that prefer bullet points:

  • Building a new army from scratch.
  • No armies with access to Rhinos, please.
  • No points limit, list limited by $400-$500USD budget
  • Single Force Organization
  • Semi-competitive, mostly-fun list.
  • Any play style
  • Short explanation why you like that army/list
  • No Forge World or Ebay. Everything ordered at FLGS
  • All prices discounted 20% from GW U.S. Retail.
  • Any combination of normal kits and Battleforces
  • Please include a list of boxes to be purchased for the army list.

  • I know this is a tall order for my second post at Dakka. I'm hoping however that this awesome community can help me out here and accept the challenge to get a solid start to a new army! I also hope that the diversity of answers this thread generates might be useful to many other people.

First of all, welcome to Dakka!

Since Imperial armies are pretty much ruled out, Xenos seems like the only option. Nidzilla is pretty good and doesn't require a lot of models.

I've just discovered FMC spam with daemons! Not all that expensive to put together, incredibly fun to play, requires thought and tactics still, but is also quite tough!

I have literally just started though, so I don't have a perfect list, here's a link to what my initial idea is....

    Commander Farsight
    =>XV8 Bodyguard w/ 1 Plasma/Fusion & Vector Retro-thrusters; 1 Plasma/Fusion & Puretide Engram Chip; 1 Plasma/Fusion & Neuroweb Jammer; 6 Gun Drones

XV104 Riptide w/ Ion Accelerator, Twin Linked Plasma Rifles & Early Warning Overide

    3 Broadsides w/ High Yield Missile Pods, Shas'vre & 6 Missile Drones
    3 Broadsides w/ High Yield Missile Pods, Shas'vre & 6 Missile Drones

    and the Codex....

All of this, with a 20% discount, would come to be about $450. A Fire Base Support Cadre Box Set and a Farsight Enclave Box Set.
Early additions to this would be another Riptide or 2 at $85 each and/or a Crisis Suit Team at $65 and add them to the Farsight Bomb.

I'm not familiar with a Nidzilla list but that name sounds interesting.

That Daemon list looks fun, I only have a few flyers so that would be quite a change.

This Tau list looks like it's capable of some nice firepower, I like the expansion options you've added as well.

Thanks for the replies. Keep them coming!

I have to second the flying circus, its competetive, has a low model count and seriously whats no fun about a group of giant flying monsters zapping their magic and backhanding tanks across the board

another thought, if you wanted to be kinda a oddball...3 imperial knight titans, a Vengeance Weapons Battery box and the knight codex. That would be 1500 points in 5 models on the field, but oh the 5 models. 2 rapid fire Battle Cannons, a 36 inch Multi Melta and 2 Quad Lascannons for AA. It's what I'll be running at a 1500 point tournament in April. Not unkillable by a long shot, but the look on people's faces...

Yeah Nidzilla, Riptide spam, or Flying circus sound like the way to go.

Thanks again for the replies everyone. I'm going to do some serious investigation on the suggestions above.
While looking through a friends Codex, he gave me a list suggestion that fit with my goals for the thread so I thought I would post it for some feedback.

    Necrons 2000 points, $501.60

    HQ
    Overlord 225pts
  • Resurrection Orb
  • Void Blade
  • Mindshackle Scarabs
  • Command Barge

  • Troops
    Warriors 10x 245pts
  • Ghost Ark

  • Warriors 10x 245pts
  • Ghost Ark

  • Warriors 10x 245pts
  • Ghost Ark

  • Warriors 10x 245pts
  • Ghost Ark

  • Warriors 10x 245pts
  • Ghost Ark

  • Heavy Support
    Doom Scythe 175pts

    Doom Scythe 175pts

    Fast Attack
    Necron Destroyers 5x 200pts

This looked like a pretty fun list to me. To my mind a surprisingly mobile Necron army. If nothing else a solid foundation for an army to be expanded later.
