So the new stormtrooper codex says if you take a formation as allies, it doesn't count as your ally choice...interesting...the air cav formation is scary good, but costs like a thousand points....so I monkeyed around with combining it with low cost guard. Here's what I came up with:
HQ:
Company Command squad with autocannon
Troops:
Platoon command squad with autocannon
Infantry squad with autocannon
Infantry squad with autocannon
Platoon command squad with autocannon
Infantry squad with autocannon
Infantry squad with autocannon
Heavy:
Russ with hull lascannon
Russ with hull lascannon
Demolisher
Ally: stormtroopers
Formation: Air Assault
HQ:
Commissar lord with carapace
HQ squad with four plasma and Valkyrie
Troops:
5 stormtroopers with 2 meltas and Valkyrie
5 stormtroopers with 2 meltas and Valkyrie
5 stormtroopers with 2 meltas and Valkyrie
Now, I'd love to just take two stormtrooper units (at ten models each), saving a ton of points that I could spend on the IG side, but the formation requires three line squads (all troops, scoring), an HQ squad, a commie, and four valks...however, the special rules are crazy good. All come in on one reserve roll, which I can reroll. That means I'm planning to come in after your flier, if you have one, and stick it with eight ordnanace krak missiles. Then I can reroll the scatter on my "jumping out of a perfectly good airplane" stormtroopers, who then also get twinlinked and split fire on arrival. Nasty, especially if the seven autocannons opened up some transports before the stormtroopers swoop in to kill the contents. With five men per squad, I expect one glorious shooting phase, then they die...but twinlinked BS4 meltas and plasmas are going to leave a mark, and fifteen of the stormtroopers are scoring, so they'll draw fire down to the last man, allowing the 55 normal guardsmen to live!
