I hate to admit it, but there are two items in the newer Tactical kit that have me stumped.

First, what is the thing dangling from the Sergeant's waist in this picture?

Spoiler:

Second, I have no idea what the shoulder pad on the right in the picture below is. What does the insignia represent? Thanks much for any input.

The first one is just a little flag loin cloth thing. What's the problem?

If you mean the centre part that is just a loin cloth, the long stick type thing is a scroll.

The thing hanging from the waist is a scroll case. In the fluff, there would be rites of battle, prayers, or even orders written on it. It is just a little piece of decoration to add some variety to your models. I typically don't use them often because it doesn't fit with my army of choice, which is Raptors.

The other thing is an iron halo, which is an honor bestowed for valor in combat. It is worn on the left shoulder and typically reserved for marines with high ranks; veteran sergeants, captains, chapter masters, etc. In game, if you choose to use it in that manner (other than just being decoration), it is an upgrade that can be found in the wargear section of the Codex.

Excellent, okay thanks for the responses. Yeah, I'm not having any problems...I just wasn't familiar with what these were.

I was familiar with the loincloth...it was the Rites that had me stumped. I knew about the fluff around Rites of Battle etc...but I didn't really have a picture in my head as to what it looked like. Thanks for that.

Also, thanks for the Iron Halo pad. Again, I'm up with a Iron Halo that a Captain can wear, but didn't know they had a shoulder pad that has the same insignia.

I am now informed!

I think I may actually use the Scroll case too, getting ready to assemble the Sergeant now. Or maybe not...or maybe a melee weapon and a pistol..or maybe a Plasma pistol..or too many choices.
