Is it there yet? I am pretty tired of paying GW a huge amount of money for substandard rules, but I still love both the miniatures and the background of their fictional universe, and would like to have the option of gaming in it.

Last time I looked into it, Warpath seemed like it had some issues as a replacement. Have those issues been confronted?

I know Imperial Guard, Space Marines and Orks have replacements in the Warpath factions, but what about:
-Chaos Marines + Cultists + Daemons as one faction?
-Eldar/Dark Eldar?
-Nids?
-Necrons?

Anyone know any decent fan made rules sets for the above, or if any of the planned or currently available Warpath factions are decent analogues?

If you check the Mantic forums, I think there's fanlists for all the 40k armies and more.

With the game itself, there are 2 versions, the aptly titled 1.0 and 2.0.

1.0 has no model removal, and treats units as a single entity, 2.0 is a little closer to 40k with model removal and different shooting profiles ect. It's more in-detail than the first edition, but loses some simplicity. The key difference is unit activation; instead of 1 player making all actions then the other, in WP a unit will activate and perform all its actions (move, shoot, fight) and then the play will either pass to the opponent or you can attempt to activate another unit. This makes the game more tactical as you can instantly counter the opponent and they have to be ready for you to do so.

I'd say that, as the rules are free, you've nothing to lose giving them a shot. It's a good ruleset in my opinion, so best of luck.

Okay, cool. Thanks. I knew there had been a couple of editions and I wasn't sure which one I wanted to get my hands on, that's clarified it nicely. I will have a look at their forum (I actually forgot they had one) and download the rules.

Again, thanks!

The Mantic forums are actually pretty useful with the rules, there's a lot of fan-rules and expansions, and I think there's even things like a Kill Team/Necromunda replacements on there.

Warpath 2.0 is definitely playable, new version is been developed at the moment, it is the next big thing from Mantic.

2.0 is a pretty solid set of rules. It focuses on infantry units and makes vehicles just detailed enough. I wish they'd pull the trigger and release a second it hard cover with lists that include some more analogues of 40k to help access. Now would be an ideal time with folks pissed about the 2 year edition schedule of 40k just released.

I'm directly in that group!

Looking into fan lists, seems like it's easy enough to balance things yourself.

Though by what I have heard about Warpath 3... I'd stick to WP2, or, better, Deadzone. (Have I mentioned that I hate the idea of unit bases for Warpath? Because hate really does not describe the depth of my loathing for that idea.)

The reason I bought rules and became a real wargamer was because I wanted a properly thought out structure to govern the action instead of just making things up as I went along.

I looked through it, and I'm fairly happy with it, except for one thing: I can't find a good substitute for Demons in the rules.
I'm currently working on a Word Bearers army that I'll use the Coporation+Enforcers to represent (cultists and marines). But I'd like to include summoned demons in the army too, and I guess Warpath isn't currently providing anything like that.

Any suggestions?

Nevermind: I just found the plague alpha list and I think I could make something out of this.

So:
Plague Warriors: CCW Cultists
Plague Troopers: Ranged Cultists

Daemons: Mix of Plague Hounds, Plague Zombies

Chaos Chosen: 2nd Gen Plague? (This is the grouping I'm least enthusiastic about- no ranged weapons etc. But they might be sufficiently intimidating to represent Chaos Marines in melee and durability, though the models are probably a little small.

Nurglings: Plague Swarms

Hellbrute: Plague Terraton
Daemon Prince: 1st Gen?

Seems like a reasonable analogue. Daemons will be a bit weak, marines a bit strong, but the overall structure ( a diverse force with a heavy melee focus) is there.

Chaos Spawn or Possessed might be best for 2nd gens.

Yeah, I agree. The problem is I really want one unit of Chosen in my army because I love the models and I love the idea of Word Bearers in "deep cover" leading to a planetary rebellion.
