As the title describes I'm going to be playing in a 4 game 1500 point modified highlander tournament this weekend and having personally always enjoyed Jy2's battle reports I am going to do my best impersonation to try and replicate them. I'm sure it will take me a long time to complete this task but hopefully I'll remember to take enough pictures and notes to eventually give Dakka a nice turn by turn account.

EVENT DETAILS: As mentioned above the tournament is a modified highlander 1500 point event. It will be a 16 person field that plays down to 1 true champion. The rules for army construction can be found Here http://texas40k.com/kharnage-for-kids . The big points in the list construction restrictions are no more than 2 vehicles of the same type (so I won't see mass wave serpents or drop pods) and no Superheavies walkers (so no imperial knights).Forge world is allowed as well as unbound if the player still meets the highlander restrictions. The missions are pretty much straight non-relic BAO missions.

MY ARMY

Spoiler:
For this event I'll be taking a version of my white scars with iron hands allies. I was particularly fortunate that the highlander rules did not impact the core of my biker army that I have gotten an extensive amount of experience playing with. Normally I would not take the dreadnought or a separate squad of attack-bikes but I was limited in how army troop bike squads I could take. Here is a list:

White Scars Primary (CAD)
HQ
Khan on moondraken
Command Squad w/bike 4 grav guns and apothecary

Troops
Bike squad +2 bikes, 2x plasma guns, attack bike w/mm
Bike squad +2 bikes, 2x plasma guns, attack bike w/mm

Elite
Dreadnought w/heavy flamer and MM in a drop pod

Fast
2x attack bikes with MM

Heavy
Thunderfire Cannon

IRON HANDS detachment (Allied)

HQ
Chapter master w/bike artificer armour thunder hammer shield eternal

Troops
Scout squad w/cammo cloaks snipers and ML

Heavy
Hunter

The army plays like a traditional bike army with the added flavor a dropping dread that is basically a glorified suicide/disruption unit. I'll get a pic of the army posted when I get a chance.

PRE-TOURNAMENT THOUGHTS: Highlander games are always fun because it's more difficult to predict the meta and the format creates different synergies in armies than what you see in the traditional competitive spam armies. That said I think I lucked out as this particular highlander format allows me to still deploy a traditional biker army with all the traditional strengths while simultaneously eliminating some of my weaknesses (massive hoards FMC spam, Hoards of summoning, tripple drakes ect). My army is extremely mobile which is always a big plus for the malestrom part of BAO missions. The dreadnought has been an under performer in my test games but he will always get placed in a useful spot and him and his pod will draw some fire from the things in my army that actually do the work (plus i can think of match ups where he would be quite useful). I also will be entering this tournament will a high level of experience with this army. While this is not my "normal" 1500 pt biker army it is not that different, and it still plays mostly the same. Thus, I think I'm positioned to do quite well but I really have no idea what to expect to see on the table across for me.

What exactly makes this a "highlander" list? Everything I've read about highlander suggests to me that duplicate units are not allowed, but you have several?

If you read the mission packet the format allows you to have 2 troops of the same type and no more that 2 dedicated transports of the same type. all heavy elite and fast attack are 0-1. Hence it it a modified highlander format.

Good luck!

I myself am going to try out the 1500 Highlander event at the Las Vegas Open GT. They look like a lot of fun.

Yea I've been having a lot of fun with it and I could see these types of events becoming extremely popular. What army are you thinking about for highlander? So far my test games have shown that necrons are extremely good at highlander.

Yeah, I'm planning on bringing my Necrons. It'll be something like my Fun-crons, though I'll have to see what the new Necron codex has to offer. It should be coming out just before the LVO.

I think Necrons, Eldar and the Centurionstar can be very good in the Highlander format. Your biker army should also do very well IMO.

I'll be interested to see how this list does! From the format restrictions it does sound like an incredibly fun format that I might have to adopt for games with my local group.

Quick question, I'm assuming the restriction to having only one unit (i.e. a Falcon) carries into an additional CAD? So a list with Jetbikes, an Autarch and Falcon in one CAD would prohibit you from taking any of those units in CAD #2. Correct?

Like jy2 said, I can see Eldar, Crons, Marines, and potentially Orks being very good in this format.

djm55: Yes, the restriction applies to all units you bring. As is stated in the link in the first post, unless it's a troop or a dedicated transport, then only one is allowed. Interestingly, this event is lacking the common restriction that a character counts as his unit type for purposes of determining whether one has already been taken. Don't know off the top of my head how that could be broken, but it may.

One of the necron lists that he's referring to was one that I brought, which was as follows:

Destroyer Lord, 2+, mindshackles

Rediculous Bargelord, warscythe, 2+, 3++, mindshackles
Royal Court: Harbinger of Destruction x2, Harbinger of the Storm x2, Harbinger of Despair w/ Veil

Deathmarks x5 (joins with Despairtek)

2x Immortals x5, Gauss, Night Scythe (each gets a Stormtek)

2x Warriors x5 on foot (each gets a Destructek)

Wraiths x6 (for the wraithstar, naturally)

Annihilation Barge (because: of course)

Allowing me to bring two scythes was something that I felt would really help out, but in our practice game it turned out that one of them (the one that didn't come on until turn 3) didn't really do very much. The rediculous bargelord was exceptionally rediculous and the DLord got up twice despite me being too cheap to buy him a resorb, which usually goes the other way around. Even still, with P_l's mobility, it was a very tight game, where he had it won if it would have ended on 5, but as it progressed from 6 and then into 7 I was able to pull off enough points to eke out a lead.

Really wanna play a game using these rules. Herald Hammer Daemons seems like they'd fit under these rules well
