Basically X-Com meets Rogue.
Is anyone else jumping in on this one early access? Initially I just wanted to see the art work (its gorgeous) but the game play is really good too. A lot like Enemy Unknown. You build a band of adventurers, go into a dungeon, and start clearing rooms for loot. You operate out of the Hamlet, where your party may rest, relieve stress, upgrade, etc. The setting is pretty eerie and actually makes good use of its Lovecraftian theme.
My only complaint is the RNG. Oh god the RNG. The game is pretty hard as it is. Managing your party's health and stress in and between delves, balancing the frequency of negative passives, and perma-death are harsh, but the game loves to feth you in horribly unfair and heart breaking ways XD I'm hoping before the full release this gets toned down. Getting wiped because your healer got moved into a position she can't heal, and then spending two rounds reshuffling the team so they can actually fight, is not challenging it's just fun killing XD

I've kept an eye on it since the Kickstarter began as it looks interesting.

I love this game. I don't normally like turn based rpg combat systems, but I really like this one.
I agree the game will feth you at a whim, but that's also what's appealing about it. I find the challenge refreshing, even if it's frustrating at times but I like how you never feel totally in control as a result, it's what makes it involving to play, no combat is the same, so you can't just play on auto pilot. I've found that with the right skills and party composition you can help mitigate randomness like having your order fethed with.
It's not a game for people who like to be totally in control of a situation. I love the fact that all your heroes are pretty much expendable and tbh, I don't want it toned down at all. I would like to be able to sell trinkets and maybe get a small percentage back from supplies I have in my inventory and didn't use, a few UI changes here and there, I shouldn't be able to get syphilis from reading a book but I don't want it to get easier or more predictable. It's a game you have to learn how to manage. It's taken me four attempts and I think I'm getting there with it but I still have runs where everything goes pete tong.
I love the art, the game oozes character and I think it's looking great. I recommend it
Also it's very polished for an early access game, no game breaking bugs so far, only a few minor issues here and there that I've encountered which is to be expected.

Have it. Love it. Frustrating as all hell...
It's the first game that I've ever bought on early access, and as such was not really sure what to expect. But it's brilliant. The aesthetic, the sound the gameplay, it's all spot on and it has the feel of a finished game. A few of the Dungeons are not yet available, as are some new characters, but they will be available soon. It's one of those games that reward risk taking but if you get unlucky or make a mistake, you are fethed.
I can't put into words how brilliant it is. It's stopped me from playing just about everything else that I own and it's worth every single penny of its £14.99 price tag. I cannot extol it's virtues and brilliance enough. But if you buy it, expect frustration. The game expects you to fail, and fail hard. But if you persevere and have a little bit of luck, it's a truly engaging experience.
If you like rogue likes and you like a real challenge you have to buy this game. It's easily the best game that I've played in the last year.

Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions

I have the game on early access. One of my friends gave it to me as a gift. Sadly for me, the game doesn’t seem to function properly on my laptop since it crashes 100% of the time on the first loading screen (the Red Hook screen.) Strangely enough, you can still hear the sound and music from the intro cinematic and the main menu, but the game itself won’t be playable.
A workaround for the above problem has been found, but for some reason the game still won’t function on my laptop. If anyone here has insight on such matters as these then feel free to fill me in.
This is what I have found so far: http://www.darkestdungeon.com/topic/game-is-stuck-on-the-red-hook-screen-after-starting-the-game/
List of fixes: http://steamcommunity.com/app/262060/discussions/0/611696927918386895/
Anyway, I can’t ( yet) recommend this game to people, who only have a laptop. I would rather wait until the game is completed or until some patch comes along and fixes the issue. That's my two cents on the matter.

I backed the Kickstarter for it, and I do not regret it one bit. The game is, indeed, quite brutal. But it's a fun brutal. Your heroes are expendable, there are more arriving every day by the wagonload. And the quotes when your heroes go crazy while on a quest are hilarious. It very much reminds of the Ravenloft D&D setting, where there were rules for terror and madness, because even experienced adventurers should not be able to battle the horrors they encounter and escape mentally unscathed.

I backed it during the KS and like Tann, I don't regret it one iota.
Fan-frigging-tastic game. Takes the difficulty level back to old school hard. It's the type of game where you can get a TPK in the first battle or not at all. The stress mechanic is fething brutal and really turns the difficulty up a couple of notches. The RNG can be a bit of a bitch sometimes but I don't think it's game breaking in anyway. It took me a while to break myself of the habit of trying to save my heroes. They really are just meat to be fed into the grinder.

What are everyone's favorite classes? Got to say, the Crusader, Occultist, Bounty Hunter, and Hellion are favorites of mine.

I like the Highwayman. His group shot attack is quite useful in just about any situation. Haven't used the Bounty Hunter much but he looks like he's got potential as a back up to a Crusader. I've given up on trying to use the Hellion. Every time I take her she dies in the first or second battle.
So far my favourite team layout is the 1st one.
Crusader, Highwayman, Vestal, Plague Doctor.
It's pretty basic really, but with the right abilities it's a quite effective team. Crusader tanks, Highwayman damages, Vestal heals and Plague Doctor. debuffs/stuns.
You can swap out the Crusader for a Leper. The Plague Doc can also be switched for a Jester if you get one with the stress reducing ability.

The only thing I've ever found a Jester to be good for is their ability to spam an acc debuff on every enemy. That ability is damn godly. Unfortunately, he has to be in the first row to use it, meaning I can't put a Hellion or Crusader in that spot.
I like the Hellion because of their group charge. Same function as the Highwayman's shot, but the upfront damage is higher, and I really like trying to knock out at least one enemy in the first turn.
Bounty Hunters have some good synergies because of their ability to pull targets. Namely those skeleton crossbow men, which are way less threatening in the first two rows.
The Crusader is a really awesome class if only cause its so flexible. He can bring heals, stress relief, and damage and stun all in one kit. The only downside is that if he's not one of the front two he can't really do much.

Regarding classes I've got to say Lepers are great tanks, though not as diverse as Crusaders they pack a punch and can be pretty self reliant with their protection buff. I kind of like all of them really although my Jester's seem to get left behind these days. I actually found spamming their stress reduction ability really useful early on, but once you can afford to remove sanity from everyone it's not really an issue.
I've yet to try spamming a single class and seeing how that works, 3 Crusaders with a Vastel would be awesome, and I'm really looking forward to getting the Houndmaster (I hope you can name the dog as well) and Man-at-arms classes.
I think the Plague Doctor is useful in order to spam blight on enemy's and to help cure blight/bleed - I've lost a few heroes thanks to not being able to remove those in time, so it's welcome when it works, although they're probably my least favourite.
All told I think they all have a place, I like rotating them around, it seems like I always have a new favourite group (unless they feth up big time).

Well the game finally game me something XD
One of my Bounty Hunters got 100 stress but instead of freaking got "Righteous" which caused a massive chain reactiom; My Vastel became Courageous, my Grave Robber Courageous, and my other Bounty Hunter Powerful XD
So that was kind of easy lmao
