I've noticed a lot of games in the style of Blood Bowl have sprung up in the past few years. Grind from PP, Dread Ball from Mantic, Kaosball, etc. What have you guys found to be the best replacement game? Or is Blood Bowl with figures from other companies still the best?

If you want to play rugby/American style football then Blood Bowl with other minis may be the way to go. I played BB only a couple of times. Liked it but didn't have a group that would play regularly.

If you want to play combat basketball-hockey-soccer, then Dreadball may be better for you. The action doesn't reset after scoring. I've played it close to 100 times including league play and, over all, it's a solid game. Some teams are wonky and they do rush some expansion stuff out the door but over all, good.

Dreadball Xtreme is also good. Don't know how balanced since I've only played it once. It takes Dreadball and makes it something like Fight Club meets organized Dreadball.

Slaughterball will be coming out this summer. It's futuristic but also has Orc/Goblin types (genetically altered humans, actually); tiger-men (also genetically altered humans); etc. It is also combat basketball-soccer-hockey with points being awarded not only for goals scored but for injuring opposing players. Here's the print and play files so you get an overview:

I've always loved Blood Bowl, one of my favorite games. I think Dreadball is better.

"Orkses never lost a battle. If we win we win, if we die we die fighting so it don't count. If we runs for it we don't die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!"

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.

I think, despite the similarity of concept ('fantasy football'), they are remarkably different games that offer a different experience.

Blood Bowl is much slower and a more measured experience, Dreadball a lot more dynamic, faster to play and explosive in terms of how the momentum can turn.

They are both products of the time in which they were made in terms of their character (note that I don't mean that in a negative way for either game).

Don't know anything about it, but Guild Ball recently finished a kickstarter. The art and minis look pretty cool so far.

You can try Elfball by Impact Miniatures, It uses a round pitch and hexagons. But, the head designer also headed the BBCRP (the Living Rules book before GW killed of the BBRC). Their minis are great for playing Blood Bowl too .

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor.

I'm very interested in this, looking forward to hearing more about it after they deliver on their KS pledges!

Dreadball is frantic, fun and has a brilliant league system. There is a little balance issue with some of the new teams but it's not too bad. I've played bloodbowl for years, but have recently changed my dwarf team to hex bases as I'm fully dreadball converted now.

Guildball looks ace, the alpha rules are available as a free download, as are the counters. So you can try it out before you commit to buying some great looking figures

Count me in as another vote for Dreadball being the worthy successor to Blood Bowl.

Admittedly though, I'd still jump at the chance to play in a Blood Bowl league
