For those of us who did manage a view of it, what did you think about the Death Star? Ive never seen a 120km diameter orb floating in near orbit before... but the one in the trailer seemed a hell of a lot bigger than 120km in diameter.

The synopsis I've heard is that:

- Rogue One is an Anthology
- Shooting begins this summer
- Film is going to be a gritty war film
- Takes place between episode 3 & 4
- Absence of Jedi will be felt through out the film

Yeah, its kinda funny.

If it was 120km in diameter, that means its way too close to the planet to have a stable orbit, and if it was at a distance where it could have a stable orbit you would need a telescope to see it.

So going by the old canon Toprawa was the planet the Death Star superlaser was developed on, it's also where the plans for the same were stolen by the Rebels and transmitted to the Tantive IV, topology generally fits the world in the preview. This could be part of the Legends canon they're keeping. A local community on Toprawa was the Antarian Rangers, a paramilitary force specializing in combat and espionage operations founded... 600 BBY or something like that? To assist the Jedi order. An organization like that, literally designed and trained from the ground up to support the Jedi, and some of the last pro-Jedi hold outs after The Clone Wars would surely be feeling their lack of presence during combat operations. The remaining Ranger cell on Toprawa was a vital part of the Rebel Alliance team that secured and transmitted the plans. Already an outlaw organization after Order 66, Toprawa was... pacified... by the Empire, and very little of the organization remained.

Further point:

While I of course being a hard core X-wing fan boy (which is actually how I know about the Rangers) was hoping for an X-wing movie, this concept is really freaking cool. So I will now sign off as being tentatively pretty pumped for the side movies. There's a lot of stories to tell in the new EU, more really with the reboot. Rogue One sounds like it's going to be pretty damn bleak. Maybe we'll see different angles being approached as opposed to the Hero's Journey monomythical style of the trilogies.

I'll probably watch this, but it does suffer from the major flaw that everybody will know how it ends. Personally, I like a bit of suspense in my films...

but I'm also a huge Bond fan, and every Bond film has the same story, so...

I was about to say "Says the man with a Sean Connery avatar"

I think knowing the story for older fans won't be too much of an impact, it's all in the telling that really matters, and frankly outside of "the bulk of the Jedi are dead and scattered" "the Empire are evil feths with a planet killing doomsday weapon" "and X amount of good guys need to get the plans of aforementioned weapon to the Corellian Corvette Tantive IV" and more basic details like "Stormtroopers are the unfriendly gentlemen in white who can't hit anything" pretty much anything can be on the table. Especially, if as I mentioned I'm hoping, the side movies can break away from the standard formula, and experiment in the universe a bit more with genre and tropes. Not every hero has a journey, and the good guys don't always win, and even when they do, that doesn't always mean a happy ending.

For the newer generation of Star Wars fans, say the cohort or two behind mine, they're less likely to have EU exposure, so a prequel story won't be a bad thing for them either because unless they listen to the old time fans, they won't know how it ends or how the plans got to Leia.

In all honesty, I don't think the Rebels are up to defeating the Galactic Empire, even in these new films.

Bond could do it. He'd break into the death star, Palpatine would reveal his evil plan in true Bond villain style, Bond would be imprisoned, would then break loose from his incompetent stormtrooper guards, and then blow up the death star, and be home for a martini with Miss Moneypenny.

And he'd probably do it in five minutes

It's interesting to see that one of the newer Star Wars books 'Tarkin' was also set at the time of the Deathstar being built. Any chance that we may see the younger Tarkin in it? With regard to the view of the Deathstar... how many times have you seen a huge moon in a Hollywood film? It will be just for affect.

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

Tarkin isn't out of the question; he's already featured in Clone Wars, which is still canon.

High hopes for this film, as it sounds like they are taking the route of more varied genre movies in the setting, which is great.

According to the new novel -- which is canon -- Tarkin oversaw the construction of the Death Star from an installation known as Sentinel Base. IIRC the novel is vague as to its location but I can check.

The novel also reveals Palpatine's given name is Sheev.

So, Star Wars is going to go the Marvel route and try to create movies in different genres than just their source genre. Good move. The question is are they going to try to build a linked movie conituity like the Avengers/Marvel are trying to do?

Since both series are from the same House of Mouse I am guessing, yes, that is exactly what they are going to do.

I'm sure all these movies take place in one and the same Star Wars setting. But note Rogue One takes place before ANH while Episode VII takes place 30 years after RotJ.

Yeah, I think Disney saw the gold they are getting out of the way they are doing Marvel and decided that with an arguably bigger franchise they could really rake it in.

Also seeing how well received GotG was they know that sci-fantasy isn't dead regardless of how some other films have done trying to make big sci-fantasy films.

It's open season on the Star Wars universe with Disney, so long as they keep making $$$.

They can do some Origins movies on Lando, Han, Chewie, etc.

They can do other one-off tie-ins. Why/when did Akbar join the Rebellion? Just what was Lando's maneuver at Tanaab? What's up with General Madine's god awful hair piece?

Seriously. Look at it! Donald Trump would be jealous!

Disney's stock increased in value by approximately $2 billion thanks to the teaser trailer. The teaser trailer. I think it is a safe bet that they will make many SW movies.

I don't believe Katarn was specifically at Toprawa, as I recall he was on mission at Danuta retrieving his chunk of the plans, but yeah that's basically what we're doing with Rogue One. Operation Skyhook.

Problem is that while the superlaser was designed and constructed at Toprawa, it was shipped to Despayre for installation and completion of the Death Star. IIRC, the Death Star never once visited the Toprawa system. Still, it would be cool if they did keep some element of the "Legends" EU ala Toprawa, even if they write Despayre out of it. Im just hoping like hell that they dont do something stupid and make it so that the first Death Star was built at Endor.

I like the idea of this film, the trailer catches me for the black out at the end and the panicked rebel chatter.. could be an interesting watch.

Also hopefully a sign of where the standalone films are going.. I had no issue with Disney owning Star Wars.. have felt they have been doing a stellar job with Marvel, this reinforces my faith in their plans.
