Subject: First KoW Tournament - Help with lists?

Hey guys. I'm thinking about signing up to my first tournament in five years, and my first KOW tournament ever. It's in October, so a long ways off yet, but I'm toying with a few different options for lists.
I have pretty large armies for Orcs, Undead, Dwarves and I could theoretically get a pretty big Viking/Celt themed KoM list up and running in time for the tournament if I knuckled down and painted my dudes.
The rough lists I am looking at would be:
Undead:
That leaves me with around 75 points to spare on magic items and the like. I like this list, because it's got a pretty decent mix of units, everything except the zombie dragon is painted up, and I have not gotten to use the models since I painted them (except in Dungeons and Dragons). I'm a bit worried that Undead might be a bit tricky to get the best out of in a tournament environment though, with the various creative uses of Surge and so on, as I am a lot less experienced.
What do you guys think of the list? Is it missing anything massive? I will post up Orc and Dwarf lists shortly if people are interested to see them... Automatically Appended Next Post: Dwarf List:
That leaves around 140 points for magic items, or I could add another troop. Main concern with this force is the lack of mobility as I don't have any Brock Cavalry, and am unlikely to be able to get any. But it's all fully painted and ready to go, so that's a pretty big plus. And it looks pretty easy to run, too. Shoot as they close and then engage in melee.

While Im also kind of a noob... Id definitely cut back on the necromancer spells. Youve got to keep in mind that youre only going to be using one spell per turn, sometimes not even that... so buying three extra spells per necromancer is probably not a great idea. It makes more sense for a big investement like a lychking, but a necromancer? Specialise a bit more. Have a dedicated surge/healer, dedicated lightning bolt/surge, dedicated buffmage... Stuff like that. Decide what the necromancer is supposed to do, and buy only the spells necessary to achieve that task.

Well, not gonna do you much good in any tournament that you will be in soon - but I really recommend getting the Brock cavalry - being able to do effective flanking with dwarfs is... a really nice feeling.
Barring the Brock... a Ranger unit is really handy as well - that little bit of extra movement before the game begins can be used to tie up an enemy unit, letting other units reach the line.
The Auld Grump - KoW has some nicely maneuverable dwarfs....

Thanks for the Necromancer advice - that is a really good point that I hadn't considered.
On Brock Riders - I'm considering getting some, but I'm assuming I won't have them. But I do have a unit of Rangers.

Personally i'd run both Skelly units with spears, Phalanx is never something to be sniffed at.

Unfortunately they're already modelled with hand weapons! Phalanx is pretty nice.
Any ideas about which army would be more forgiving for a noob?

Wait. You have to buy spells in 2nd edition?

You can tailor spell casters by buying extra spells, or not.

Every Spell caster has 1 "free" spell worked into their initial cost, and can buy the other spells for varying amount of points depending on the faction.

So, in the end I settled on Dwarves because the tournament had fewer Dwarf players signed up than Undead players, and diversity is good.
List currently looks like:
Berserkers Regiment (20) 180
- Brew of Strength 30 (Gives Crushing Strength)
Ironclad Infantry Horde(40) 180
- Orcsbain’s Amulet of Thorns 35 (Gives Phalanx)
Ironwatch Crossbows Infantry Troop(10) x 2 200
Ironwatch Rifles Infantry Troop (10) x 2 230
Rangers Infantry Regiment (20) 180
- Brew of Haste 15 (Increases Speed by 1)
Shieldbreakers Infantry Regiment (20) 130
- Mace of Crushing 5 (I think lets them re-roll 1 damage dice)
Earth Elementals Large InfantryRegiment (3) 130
Ironbelcher Cannon War Engine (1) 110
Ironbelcher Organ Gun War Engine (1) 85
King Hero (1) 120
- Blade of Slashing 5 (Re-roll 1 to hit dice)
Stone Priest Hero (1) 105
- Bane Chant (2) 15 (Thinking of swapping this for the item that increases Surge)
Warsmith Hero(1) 85 (1),
Greater Earth Elemental Monster (1) 160
2000
Basic plan would be that Rangers head off into whatever terrain there is and try to set up a flank. Stone Priest and Elementals either follow as they can with Surges into the terrain or head for some other patch of terrain where their Pathfinder can outweight their shambling. The main battle line trundles forward and opens up with firepower, hopefully crippling enemy firepower before it can be brought to bear on the shieldbreakers and berserkers. Once the enemy gets close enough, allow the missile units to take the charge to allow the counter-charge. The King hovers round the back of the three main battle line units and the Warsmith camps out with the two war machines.

Personally, that seems like too much magic items. Could probably squeeze 90 points out of that and regiment up a troop. For me magic is just a points filler, if you can drop it and go for more bodies you generally should outside of very specific cases.

Possibly a good point alright. I will see what I can do with my collection - model wise, I can add another cannon, another Organ Gun, any of the heroes, and another regiment of Berserkers. I might have enough Crossbows to increase one of them up to regiment size too.

I'd keep the Brew of Haste - getting the Rangers in range quickly can really help. (I tend to put one in either by Brock riders or my Rangers.)
Mobility means a lot in Kings of War.
The Auld Grump
*EDIT* That extra movement is really nice when you are targeting a flank....

Don't forget the games fairly fast and loose with actual numbers of models. If your one or two, or even four or five shorts I doubt anyone will complain given your playing with the footprint of the unit as a whole. If need be throw some barrels or something down to make up the space with the crossbows? Pavices work well too and aren't terribly hard to mock up.

So quasi-similar to the GW process of differentiating a Lvl 1 wizard vs. a Lvl 3.
The lvl 3 has more ability and thus costs more.
