Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

This is a fan film, with official support right down to cameos from well known Star Trek actors.
I hadnt heard of this production until today, not being any major Star Trek fan, so it is possible I am the last on Dakka to know, but in case I am not:

Still watching it, but stopped 20 minutes in to post a heads up here. SFX is rather basic, but that deosnt matter to me. Some of the acting is wooden, but it is Star Trek after all so all is forgiven; but the plot looks crazy good.
Enjoy.

Yeah, it's more of "Uneven floor, watch your step" with that one.

Yeah, well, Paramount's issue, not mine.

After Nemesis, ST needed the kick in the arse that JJ gave it. At least the tedium was broken up with lens flares and MTV jump cuts.

JJ really did put the fun and adventure back into the Star Trek franchise with that first movie. It had been missing that since TOS. Still doesn't excuse all the "bad touch" stuff he also did with the sequel, though.

I'm not sure why JJ is the one who constantly catches the flak for the second movie. He didn't write the script, and ignoring the wild lore/plot inconsistencies (and one particular scene of soft nudity), everything else in that movie was great. As far 'direction' was concerned, Into Darkness was very good. Shouldn't we be aiming our fan ire at Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof

Lindelof for sure.

I'd blame him for Prometheus, too.

Issues with the script (and abysmal re-hash of the reactor scene), most fundamentally with the movie, I can never take Benedict Cucumber seriously as Khan. I think the guy's a great actor, and I don't think there was anything wrong with his performance, but in the end, he is no Ricardo Montalban, and he is no Khan Noonien Singh.

Wrong role for the actor, and that had a major impact on my enjoyment of the movie. I don't know who gets the blame for that, but oh man was that just a...wrong choice.

This right here. Cumberbatch doesn't have the... physicality... of Ricardo Montalban, of Khan... of not only being the smartest motherfether in the room, but also being the strongest, fastest, and most-likely to murder you with a paper clip. Khan was never some reedy dork. He was a product of the Eugenics Wars of Old Earth, designed to be the pinnacle of human achievement.

Cumberbatch just... couldn't sell that on-screen.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Aye. Cumberbatch would have made a great Section 31 villain, an outstanding Romulan, Cardassian, or Vorta, or other such antagonist, but he just can't match the physical presence and visual suave of Ricardo Montalban as Khan Noonien Singh.

I felt that Cumberbatch did an excellent job as one of Khan's supermen, just not Khan himself. And that's how it should have been played: he was just one of Khan's men, and Khan is still out there to be tracked down (for sequels/tv series purposes).

To be honest I don't think they should ever have gone anywhere near Khan in these new movies. I'm not sure quite why they went to such lengths to establish a 'new' feel, continuity and setting in the first film only to bring out the most iconic villain of the TOS era and retread plots, lines and even whole scenes from what I'd say is the best ST movie. I agree that Cumberbatch wasn't the right choice, but I don't really think anyone could have carried that off. It would be like recasting the voice of Vader, or trying to do another Loki in 40 years' time; the original portrayals are so iconic and defining that no one could ever come close.

Perhaps my biggest problem with ST:ID is how good it could have been/how good it looked from the trailers. The first film was really rather good and gave me a lot of faith in this new version of the setting, only for the second to be appalling and completely underwhelming (after watching Iron Man 3 I didn't think I could be much more disappointed by a film, a week later ID proved me wrong). Even leaving aside the casting issues and poor or reused plot elements, the film itself wasn't entertaining; perhaps as a sci-fi with nothing to do with Star Trek I might have enjoyed it a little more, but even then it would hardly be something I'd want to watch again.

Exactly. On a standalone basis the movie reaked. On the basis they took arguably the most iconic best ST movie previously and took a massive runny TexaMex all over it just makes it infuriating.

Personally I found both the new Star Trek Movies hugely enjoyable......

There were a few over long bits and glitches but compared to some of the dross out there that is critically acclaimed both were excellent.

I was not keen on BC before I saw the movie but happy with his portrayal within it.

It could have been as bad as Insurrection or the first 3/4 of Nemesis.....

I didn't mind the BC as Khan bit, but the stupid Giant glaring plot holes of the interstellar transporter and injection that cures death were really really bad.

Wait, are we talking about Renegades or the new Star Trek Movies?

I like the new Star Trek movies.

Good. Other than Star Trek 2, the other Star Trek movies sucked ass. Seriously. Go watch them. See?

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Cumberbatch did a good job as Khan, as noted his limitations are due to his physicality. His depiction of Khan was notable intelligent and dangerous, but lacked the air of raw primal menace.

They needed someone who could pass for a transhuman and yet also had a keen intellect. That would be a touch call. Jason Statham has the menace, and that part of the presence, but cant come across as a genius.

Frankly I am at a loss as to who to cast. But agree with the premise that having Cumberbatch play Khan's lieutenant would make sense, and would add to the hype and threat as to who and how the real Khan would turn up.

Anyway back on topic.

Renegades is a budgetless fan film, with the advantage of having screen time with series regulars. Comparing it to other professionally budgeted Star Trek films is unfair, and frankly a backhanded compliment.
When watching fan film the differences in production quality should be taken into account on critique.

Having an argument with yourself?

I mostly agree on Star Trek movies, though I liked the first one also.
That being said, I enjoyed them all, including Nemesis. If find the trick to watching any Star Trek movie except Wrath of Khan is to remember its a Star Trek movie, there will be plot holes, there will be questionable acting, but if you don't let it bother you you will have fun watching them. Wrath of Khan is an odd exception because it is just a phenomenally good film in almost every way, one of my favourites from any genre, and I am not a Star Trek fan.

As others have said, bad script, and wooden acting, but wtf? I'm glad this was made. It's not horrible, and should have value for \pre-Abrams Star Trek fans due to the legit actors. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I hope whoever did this, does more of it.

Reminds me a bit of Mortal Kombat.
