AoS has got me seriously considering getting into 40K and I keep seeing the Dark Vengeance box set going for less than $100 ($93.75 at my local shop). Is this the most recent "starter set" to begin playing 40K?

I am open to other suggestions but I do like the idea of rules, miniature and fluff all in one box to simplify the learning curve.

Thanks,
Will

If you are interested in either of the armies that are in the box, those being Dark Angels and Chaos Space Marines, then sure it is worth as a starter box. You most likely can get it cheaper from ebay though.

7th edition 40k is a lot like BDSM these days. Only play with people you know and develop a safe word for when things get too intense. And It doesn't hurt to be a sadist or masochist as well.

Make SURE you get the set with 7th ed rules.

If you're interested in DA, it's good. If you're interested in CSM, it's practically a 1k point army.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

They released a couple other starter sets withhin the last year or so you may be able to find still.

Deathstorm was Tyranids vs. Blood Angels (playing into the Space Hulk game)

Stormclaw was Orks vs. Space Wolves.

They're now out of print I think, but my flgs still has a copy of both, and maybe they can be found still on eBay, if any of those armies appeal to you.

If you buy some green stuff then it's basically a 1000 point burgle army. Only problem is that you have to ask yourself if you reallllly want to play csm

Deathstorm was a far better box. Marines will always be taken care of in the box sets but the opposing army...? The CSM from DV are horribly set up for anything other than DV and even then the matches are pretty biased. The DA side of the kit is almost worth the price in itself, especially with the mini rules and templates added in.

This line of reasoning broke 7th edition in Fantasy. The books should be as equal as possible, even a theoretical "Codex: Squirrels with Crustacean allies" should have a fair chance to beat "Codex: God".
