I've been working on this Command Base for King Harold in the background whilst painting up Huscarls for the demo.

You can see more pics and read all about it on my Just Add Water Blog here:

Cheers,
Darrell.

The diorama is really nice, but those banners are killer. Great job.

It... It's ok. Most parts would do with being more seamless blending [or actually being blended at all] and the chainmail is almost completely flat, with little contrast. but I guess the banner looks decent.

I took some close ups this morning- some of them are at a 'funny' angle but I was using the macro and it was hard to get in to some of the nooks and crannies of the vignette!

Cheers,
Darrell.

Is there any of your work about in the Gallery or anywhere? I'd love to see it?

Darrell.

I don't really have any images on the gallery, but I know what the master painters [e.g 9.0+ on CMON] agree is needed for a great miniature and your piece does not seem to have many of them sorry

Hi Atheling. I feel your pain, honest, but some people on Dakka are maybe not entirely used to some of the styles used to paint historical minis, no matter how well done.

On the other hand, Sing, don't assume that the CMoN 'highlight to white' style is the only ideal in miniature painting, let alone the ideal everyone should aspire to. Plenty could care less what CMoN gets up to.

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.

Actually, I was more thinking realistic and seamless blending of highlight and shade colours [just look at the join from Harold's shield arm to his arm!]. Really CMON voters seem to like most styles that look impressive and/or difficult to pull off.

My 'piece' as you put if so deftly is going to be part of a much larger demo game commemorating the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings and will contain many hundreds of mini's. If I were to concentrate on twenty or thirst layers on each mini it would probably take up to ten years to complete the miniatures! Obviously this is no good for a demo game of a famous battle.

Believe me, I can layer and have done so before. It's a painting style that i left behind many years ago as it was just too unproductive in terms of numbers. That hasn't stopped my work from being features in many wargames rule sets and many companies web sites for example, Perry Miniatures. The rule sets include Warlord Games, Warhammer Ancient Battles, Clash of Empires etc etc. There are literally too many to mention.

It's a shame that you haven't published any of your work nor indeed posted it up in the gallery..... I find your criticism quite ironic in this light.

I am very appreciative of many styles of painting including that of the supposed C'MON style. It takes all sorts as they say

Yeah, it seems self evident that this is so.

Anyway, mini rant over. I'm always interested in positive comments from other painters

I get your point about this trio being only part of a many hundred strong army, but isn't Godwinnson going to stand right out from the masses in the demo game? So some more care and attention than usual on this "piece" would be well deserved IMHO.

The counter argument is that he will stand out as one of several hundred infantry and cavalry on a large table viewed from a distance of at least five feet away. So it is pointless to paint details that stand up to scrutiny when viewed through a microscope at two or three times life size.

People forget that when they view a digital phot on the internet, it is giving them a better view of the object than they would get in real life even if they could pick it up and look at it closely.
