I want to bring the rodents into the year 40,000. I think using Ork rules are probably the best for the models, but does anyone have any proxy/conversion ideas?

That's a great start, can definitely fill in directly for a few of the Ork units. Keep those suggestions coming!

skaven dont seem like the front line fighter types to me. I would probably make them like IG, or dark eldar for poison and quickness.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Yeah the more I think abou ti the more I would run them as dark eldar. The rat ogres can be grotesques/talos/chronos and such. seems a good fit

DE for me. I really think that would represent them well

DE would work very well, here's some reccomendations for DE -> skaven units.
Stormvermin: Kabalite warriors
Clanrats: Wyches
Stormfiends: Grotesque
Skaven Warlord: Archon

I use them as a band of mutant heretics, using the Inquisition rules.

I run 2-5 bands of psykers, plus 1-4 Inqusitors in a Land Raider with a band of Crusaders.

Welcome to the Freakshow!

A clan Moulder/ Skyre army could be done with Cult AdMech list potentially. You could run Stormfiends as Kastellans, Jezzail or mortar types on tracks for the troops and warlock engineers for Tech priests Dark Eldar would definitely fit in best though I'd be tempted to run unconverted stormvermin as incubi

feth I made a whole fan-dex for these guys a while back. It focused around IG guard like troops and crazy tanks with upgrades and alternates for everything. The upgrades were cheaper than would normally be fair for the power they added but increased the chance of their guns exploding.

There was a whole instability table dictating what you had to role and what happened if you failed. Upgrades increased instability. There were also mutations which increased stats a little like nid biomorphs.

iirc the basic troop was about the price of a guardsman with a notably better gun but on a to hit role of 1 they would take a S3 hit.

Doesn't take too much hacking to put Skitarii arms on stormvermin models. You'll definitely need to cut back the hood/robes on the front of the body, and there's a bit of tinkering with the arms to fit, but otherwise no problem.

Wouldn't you want a pskyer army though?

I mean, Grey Seers are pretty important.

You're not. If you're worried about your opponent using 'fake' rules, you're having fun the wrong way. This hobby isn't about rules. It's about buying Citadel miniatures.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I've decided to go with Orks, with Storm vermin proxying as Boyz and Clanrats as Gretchin. I have a few other ideas in mind as well.

One of the questions I had was if anyone had any ideas for the Ork weapons? They look a bit bulky/clunky on the Skaven for the most part, so I am considering ordering bits for pistols, knives, axes, and some other weaponry also. Not sure which army to draw from though so any suggestions welcome.

My biggest desire for 40k skaven would still be 'expendable' for Skaven slaves.

Shooting into combat? Yes please!
