Subject: 30K Marines: Anyway to take Legion Drop Pods without the Oribatal Assault Rite of War?

Reading through the Crusade Army List, it would seem that the only way to unlock Legion Drop Pods is by bringing a Praetor and using the Orbital Assault Rite of War.
Am I missing something, or is this correct?
Automatically Appended Next Post:
P.S. I see now that there is a Ravenguard Rite of War also unlocks Legion Drop Pods.
I think GW/ FW don't want to sell me any drop-pods

It's because they want to sell you dreadclaws and kharybdis models, instead.

For the most part. I think there are several Legion specific ROWs and characters I think that allow them. Night Lords are one I know off hand.
|
If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM! |

I don't think it's that, especially since the book was published before either alternative drop pod model existed. I think it's more the case that drop pods are so ridiculously effective for their point cost that you'd have to be crazy not to take one for a unit that doesn't already have some other transport. So either you spend your RoW and take the included limitations to unlock that power, or you pay more points and FOC slots to take the variant pods.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

There are some units that would be stupidly effective if it was easier to get them without the drawbacks. Tactical Support Teams for example, worse than sternguard and they are troops,(even if noncompulsary).

Yeah, I can see that FotL,10 man melta squads, etc. would be nasty coming out of a drop-pod.
I guess I'm just disappointed, because drop-pods are a pretty iconic Space Marine thing, and while 40k Marine units can take them willy-nilly, if I ever want to play with even 1, I have to buy like 4 or 5 of them, or repaint my dudes as Ravenguard, neither of which is something I'm going to do.

To be honest, it makes more sense to me. Space marines doing a massed drop makes sense (which is what Orbital Assault is).
Flinging one squad into an ongoing battle always seemed wierd.

30K is slightly different in theme, though. It's less about elite forces making surgical strikes, but legions of marines making mass landings in transports with tanks and other armor supporting.
