I'm a 40K Squat player who stopped playing minis games when my species was purged from the fluff, partly because of the general insult to me as a customer, but mostly because I was moving from state to state and lacked the space to store miniatures armies, as well as a stable geographical minis group. I've played a lot of other minis games over the years, starting with Dunn Kempf micro-armor in '78, followed by historicals, Battletech and Ogre-GEV before discovering my beloved Squats. I built a sizable army of about 10,000 points of Squats in the 80s and early 90s.

I worked for Osprey for three years and got back into historical minis gaming while in their employ. Now I've moved home and found that my original 40K group is stronger than ever. A few games of Necromunda and Kill Teams have rekindled my interest in 40K. Currently I have about 1500 points and am rebuilding my Squat army, as well as Squat and Ratling Necromunda gangs. I found the 40K Squat FB group which is a great forum for keeping the species alive and being inspired by kit-bashing and paint jobs. I've also found a lot of old thread discussions on the web about Squats and their place or lack thereof in the 40K universe.

I saw a thread on here where someone asked why people are drawn to playing Squats and wanted to respond.

Also, there're a lot of good discussions on here. In addition I'm deciding about building a second army, perhaps for another sci-fi minis game system, because I can only play Squats with a Codex that lacks fluff growth/change and GW support. I feel drawn by the quality of Mantic's Veer-myn and Plague lines. So I'm thinking of making those a Chaos Nurgle Renegades force for 40K, or just trying Mantic's Warpath rule system. I also have about 30 Space Marines that I can convert into Rainbow Chapter Chaos SMs...with plumage I actually love that paint scheme.

I too had a fairly sized 40k army and also an epic army (for which I think the squats really fulfilled their character).

If you're a fan of 'dwarves in space' would thoroughly recommend Mantic's Forgefather line which is really looking quite excellent now (and, I think kind of what GW would probably have gone with if the Squat race hadn't ended up as chow for the Tyranids!)

Glad to see someone keeping the Squat memory alive.

I like thinking about Squats and what their niche/specialty would be in the game system. What would set them apart from the other armies? Slower-moving, shorter range, but very powerful guns, strong armor and good morale? How about no psykers but a powerful psychic-resistance? It might be interesting to see an army the excels in close-range firefights, but is vulnerable to being out-maneuvered.

I'd love to see the army return. Post lots of pics, fluff, and rules for us!
