Hey guys,

First time poster. I've not picked up a paintbrush in about 15 years but here I am again ready to give it a go. I've grabbed some cheap tactical marines and fallen in love with the Crimson Fists.

Here's a couple of WIP pics.

tell me what you think and I'll head over to the paint forum.

Great start! If I could offer any advice, you're edge highlighting is quite thick in places, it may be easier if you use a smaller brush or even thin your paints more

Thanks guys!

To be honest I'd never edge highlighted in my life. Currently using some really bad £1 brushes and the cheapest paints I could find just to test, see if I was any good kind of thing.

Does anyone have any tips on using a wash/shade? Mine always seem to dry quite thin, I never seem to get the deep shadows I see a lot of.

Cheers again guys!

Thin your paints for the edging a little more and if possible use the side of the brush rather than the tip - ie along the edges of the pauldrons. Washes can be layered on too. It's better to give something 2 or even 3 thin layers or wash than flooding the area to try and make it darker. Flooding ends up giving some nasty stain effects. Nuln oil is your friend a dash of it darkens other washes quite nicely. Honestly though - I think those marines are looking pretty nice so don't beat yourself up too much. DO, however, get some decent brushes!! Cheap'n'nasty brushes are handy for some things though. I use them for washes and glazes usually but for layering and the like.....yeah - something a little better. hope this helps

Cheers man, thanks for the tips. Oddly ivew had some new brushes turn up today. Now I just need to strip some really bad marines and try again. I'll keep updating here for now.

So I've spent the evening practicing some highlights. Also worked up to 3 layers of nuln oil to get the recessed areas good and dark.

Very nice looking. Maybe you can start a P and M blog so we can follow the rise of your Fists?
