Hello

I'm noob to 40k games, and I hope to play AM army. Right now I just have 7ed rule book and AM codex. I will invest to build up 1500~2000pt AM army, slowly, and here is the question.

Are there any website or blog to introduce and explain about different types of AM army? Or, anyone could very briefly mention about the types of AM army? Like Armored, Artillery, Infantry, Airborne infantry, Mechanized, mixed .... etc.
Before I invest on models, I hope to decide and make sure what kind of AM army should I need to consider.
Right now I'm interested in armored, but I also hope to know what are the merits/strong points, and funs of other AM army variants.

Thank you

Best,

First of all, check out Boot Camp - it's a website dedicated to Imperial Guard (Astra Militarium).

Most IG/AM armies have a good mixture of stuff but you should consider whether you to go for tanks, planes or troops as your main thing. All are fairly effective but they are quite different to play.

The most important thing for your first army is to find a theme that captures your imagination.

you can't go wrong with mechanised lists i've heard. But haven't seen anybin play, so i can't confirm.

theres also only pure tank lists

full out infantry lists

one of my favorite is full out plasma veteran spam with a bunch of melta\plasma militarum tempestus deepstrikers.

What do YOU like about the army? What made YOU decide the Astra Militarum was the army you wanted to play in 40K? If you want to win and competitive play is your focus, the AM is not the army you should be starting with. But I'm guessing there's something about the way the army looks on the table that drew your attention. I know it did for me.

When you're just starting out, you really can't go wrong. No AM player was ever heard to say, "I have too much infantry" or "What am I supposed to do with all these tanks?"

Wyverns or Thudd guns, Vulture Gunships, Armored group battalion Beast hunter tanks, Sabre Platforms, and inquisitor allies is what I suggest looking into when getting serious.

If you're interested in potentially running Forge World, then do take into consideration the Renegades and Heretics lists they offer in a couple of Imperial Armour books.

Those armies seem to be far more competitive than guard what with the demagoge devotions, not charging points for things you have no interest in (you have to buy armor for your units, they also come stock at BS and WS 2) so that you can put points where you really want them to be rather than blanket costs.

While the list represents heretics, it does represent guard heretics. So you can easily simply paint up a traditional IG force whilst using it out of one of those codex' and saying "Oh yeah, they're defectors" without getting many to bat an eye at it.

Basic mech template that I've seen is:

Pask as an HQ in a Punisher with an exterminator buddy, these guys can threaten pretty much anything with lots of dakka. Sponsons are up you but I like putting HB sponsons and hull lascannon on both.

Vet squads with melta or plasma in chimera, go to anti-tank with melta and plasma vets are great against marine armies. I like 2 melta squads and 1 plasma.

Wyverns!!! This is probably the best unit Guard has in the basic codex. Take 2-3 in a squadron if you have the money.

He's been ferried through hell on a ship that's ten thousand years old to some godforsaken, war-torn rock; He is one of ten million men snatched from his home to fight a war he barely understands; He wages war against devouring hiveminds, ravenous demons and hordes of hyper-advanced aliens with strange technologies and sorceries he never dreamed existed; no one will remember his sacrifice, there will be no records of his deeds, no glorious parades in his honor, and no remembrance of his name. All he will earn is a shallow, unmarked grave on a forgotten world untold lightyears from home.

Yet for all this thankless sacrifice a Guardsman is a man, just like you. He has no millennia-old genetic engineering, no prophetic leader, no miracles of faith. He has his lasgun, his orders, and those beside him. He is the Imperial Guard.

And he will hold the line.

I vote the Pask and LRBT route because a wall of av13 require heavy list tailoring of lascannons and melta or fast pf melee.

If your opponent has a take all comers list then he wont has as many anti tank weapons. Its only when he heavily tailors it.

Don't let anyone scare you away from an infantry army. They can be lots of fun to play and if used effectivly, they can overwhelm Marines and even Deamons (in one game, a single unit of vets held up a Deamon Prince for 4 turns before finally falling to him because the last guy ran). They can be time consuming to play though, and to build, and paint.

As it has been said previously, IG is nice to play when it fits the style you want. Before any advice on list composition, you should think deeply on your theme, because it is always better to create lists from a fluffy standpoint (IMO).
If you choose, Idk, let's say a WWII American-style army, you will know you won't have any Leman Russ. If you go DKoK, expect a lot of infantry supported by a line of guns (even if there are other ways like Armoured Brigade to play those guys)
IG is one of the best army when it comes to customization. Don't miss that !

- 22nd Rhayé Storm Division : 2000points (Spetsnaz-themed IG)

- Ordo Xenos : ~700pts
