Hi everyone,

I wanted to share with you an idea I had a few days ago. The main goal would be to build a database on every Imperial guard regiment we could identify.

I mean here write an excel file with the regiment name, homeworld, type, picture of a soldier, etc... wherein anyone could present its own regiment but also where official regiments would be referenced. More than the endless list of sometimes empty entries we can find on the 40k wikis, we could build a true goldmine where beginners but also veterans could find input on any regiment, either famous or badly known ones. Curious people should just have to type a keyword : a theme (Paratroopers, mechanized, Prussian), a piece of wargear they like (tartans?), a name (Fusiliers, Dogs) or an adjective (tough, disciplined) and see what fits with their idea.

With this, we could even bring long forgotten regiments out of the shadows were GW let them by promoting only Cadians and constantly downgrading conversions and diversity in its official material.

As I said, there are many regiments that are only "empty entries", that is to say are nothing but a number and a name with no background nor imagery behind. In this project, I would love to give room to people who took these empty names and made them true minis with a given flavour, but I would also like to give people who totally invented their regiment a showcase that could be consulted by anyone.

More than a rehash of a wikia, it could be an interesting reference for people who want to have a glance on the diversity of the Guard (without being forced to spend hours on the wikis), people who want to promote their own regiment, or want to find inspiration / find a theme that as not been exploited. In other words, the wikis, forums and WD would the encyclopaedia of the Guard while this database would be its table of content. A simple and handy access to the amazing (and seldom forgotten) richness of this faction.

I thought about keeping it very simple, with broad keyboard and general background references that could help visitors of the database to identify and situate every regiment in the 40k universe.

The only condition to be registered in the database should be having at least one picture of a soldier in the regiment livery (pic of the mini, artwork, even 3D modelling...) and a minimum background to avoid "empty entries".

Here are the main criterias of the database :

Name, Homeworld, Type, Battle Style, Distinctive Wargear, Keyword description, Notable Campaign, Source & Credits, link to a picture of a guardsmen

I don't know whether this first draft is handy enough nor interesting for outsiders. I made this as a first step and I have no idea what it is worth. That's why I would like to test the water among IG players (and others interested in the matter) and gather advice, ideas and perhaps even the first contributions.

Note that for the moment, the database is barely a compilation of the most notorious regiments + the ones with illustrations I could find. I also add my regiment

@Brennonjw

I have indeed exploited these lists, trying to extract the non empty entries (that is to say regiment with actual background and illustration). Some may be absent still.

The next step should be to register the ones that have been exploited by players, either with models or artworks.

The lists are exhaustive but I find them all but intuitive

Edit : the database may have not been accessible. Can you see it now?

Ah, you're building a corpus. Excellent.

You should include a column for the source of each regiment ("Codex: Imperial Guard 4th Edition", for example). If you do want to have non-GW regiments on there, a second worksheet in the book might be better than holding them all in line. It would make for easier cross referencing and easier writing when you do a front page.

Unfortunately, the last Regimental Database project someone did, back in 2013, died when their website was reposessed.

Thanks for the advice Furyou. Adding the source is indeed a better idea, it would give a direction to go to any people who might want to know more.

Do you remember what were the main contents of the previous database? It may be useful to take inspiration!

The actual data was only stored on that website because it used an entry form, but I remember that it listed;

Regiment name
Regiment home world
Regiment specialisation
Regiment size
Notable heroes
Notable actions

Okay, nice.

The good point is that the database will not be redundant, as the one in B&C seems completely forsaken. Let's hope this one will not know the same fate.

I have added the sources and will continue to gather regiments today. IG players, submit your homebrew regiments, we can do something nice !

I like the looks of this. How do we add our stuff and the other less-known fluff regiments?

Hi Mudrat!

I was thinking about two solutions:
- Either people post the main features of their regiment like (Name, Homeworld, Type, Battle Style, Distinctive Wargear, Keyword description, Notable Campaign, Source & Credits, link to a picture of a soldier) and I add them in the data base.

- Either I make this document public and anyone can modify it.

About less-know fluff regiments, I think they must have at least some developed background (description of the aforementioned main features) in GW or related official material, so we can have a glance on the identity of the regiment. A picture should be a priority even though it is not compulsory ; some cool regiments have no illustrations but some kind of background.
See for example the Urdesh Storm troopers I just added

What do you think about this?

On the lesser regiments, one that isn't on there yet is the Roane deepers (not sure about spelling) from Necropolis. I think you've got all the big ones and most of the minor, but they are still a few.

On adding homemade regiments, making the document public is the easiest solution IMO, however there is the concern of people modifying each others regiments.

As far as people adding their own regiments, their should be a second database for that with people sending the details of the custom regiment in a form that can easily be copy-pasted into the database.

It means that people can't edit other people's work and the database still gets collated.

This is good, I think. If we see an official regiment that isn't already added, we can just put it there andnote it as in the fluff.

Illum's plan is the safest, but also requires a lot of book-keeping from you as administrator.

I do agree, that's the safest both for modifications and the addition of new regiments. I will do this now.
I don't mind being an administrator, I like to compile and investigate for new entries

Here you got, Mudrat !

- Please tell me if you the file is accessible to modification to anyone
- I would also like to know whether the title and first three lines are blocked to modification? These should be the main guideline for the sheet users so it should stay as it is.

Thanks in advance, and thanks for your enthusiasm
I'm eagerly waiting your contribution.

Okay, I believe we're up there. As far as details go, that's a GW pic, not one of mine, but the picture captures the idea and I'm not a good enough converter to make such models (yet ). Basically the only thing I would change would be more brown in the scheme, and a sentinel in the background.
Let me know if there are any issues, but contact may be haphazard for the next week.

Ok, very nice !

I felt I also had to add a column "Battle Style" to be as precise as the database can be. It is an interesting feature (promise I will stop there ^^).

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I'm proud to say the database received its first two contributions, from Mudrat and another anonymous user !

Keep it coming !

All right, I'm looking at this right now. I have review some developed IG projects on Deviantart, which is actually a goldmine of very interesting homemade fluff.

Do you have any idea how to promote our project to the greatest mass of IG players? I feel like people have plenty of ideas that would benefit from being gathered in one place.
