Whatever you do, DO NOT READ DAMNATION OF PYTHOS!
Baneblade was pretty good. And I always recommend the first 3 Heresy novels. I also read a book once about Armageddon, it followed a BT dread around. Was pretty cool.

JSF wrote:... this is really quite an audacious move by GW, throwing out any pretext that this is a game and that its customers exist to do anything other than buy their overpriced products for the sake of it. The naked arrogance, greed and contempt for their audience is shocking. = Epic First Post.

Check out the short story compilation Let the Galaxy Burn. (Ed. Christian Dunn and Marc Gascoigne.) It has a huge number of stories on a wide range of topics. It's a great way to find characters, factions, and authors you might not otherwise have known you were interested in.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I've heard "Wrath of Iron" is a good book about Iron Hands.

Not to derail the topic, but is the First Heretic any good? I like the idea, and I used to play Word Bearers back in 3rd or 4th, but I don't want to bother if it's just bland.

I'm reading Dan Abnett's Eisenhorn trilogy currently, and it is my first foray into 40k fiction (having been very wary/dismissive previously).
Abnett is probably the Black Library's most respected author, and while I wouldn't say he ranks up with authors I like outside of Games Workshop, I can see why he is liked and the books are definitely the best Games Workshop fiction I have read.
If you like Inquisitors and are interested in Imperial Planets that have not been obliterated into rubble by war, I recommend these books!

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-) |

I'd recommend the Night Lords series by Aaron Dembski-Bowden. He's a decent writer and realises the importance of character development compared to some BL authors.

Dan Abnett and Aaron Dembsi-Bowden are the best writers in their stable. I'd say ADB's become my favorite, with his excellent Night Lords trilogy, his entries into the Horus Heresy, the blockbuster action movie that is Helsreach, and the misleadingly titled but still excellent Talon of Horus. The dude writes bad guys REALLY well.
