Looking on assembling a basic 30k army (will be going with wolves eventually) aiming to make it mainly assault oriented. What builds or units combine efficiently to bring about a close combat shock assault war machine for killing traitors during the Heresy? I have a few ideas. For starters, Would Storm Eagles be a better choice then a second Spartan? What would be a decent heavy support to back up the main assault force? Etc. Etc... Looking to hear what experienced players have to offer before committing. Thank you.

Already owned:
B@C set
20 Despoiler marines
5 (more) Cataphractii
Contemptor/ power fists
1 Rhino
1 Spartan Assault Tank
1 Sicaran
FW Praetors
FW Apothecarys

I'll move the thread to 30K forum.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Hmmm
How about Land Raider Phobos?
Its an Assault Vehicle and can protect your marines whilst advancing up the Table
Either That, or the Spartan (Take 19 Despoiler Marines and 1 Apothecary, Give the Apothecary Artificer armour and a power Sword)
Or you could Give all those Despoilers Jump Packs and stick a Chaplain (or Primus Medicae) in the Squad, then give them all Meltabombs

I can only suggest what has worked for me in my games. But I am by no means an expert!

I personally play Corvidae Cult Loyalist Thousand Sons 30k/Blood Ravens 40k so I can keep fluff accurate and play with pretty toys and legion rules in both as long as my opponent is cool with it :p (Orks hate Volkite!)

Storm Eagles are amazing, and the best part about them is they are fast attack slots with the punch of a heavy support when upgraded.

Something I would personally suggest though it can be a nightmare kit at times is the Caestus Assault Ram. It's durrable hits hard, and can deliver your guys anywhere you need em.

The other option for getting up close and personal real quick is the Assault Claw or Dread claw Drop Pods. But those of course come with the usual drawback for assaulting units.

Armies:
32,000 points (Blood Ravens) 2500 (and growing) 1850

The ram I have wanted since I first saw it. It was really down to the ram or the storm eagle for my flyer. How does it the ram compare to the storm eagle? Really debating on if I should keep my guys grounded with assault tanks or not. The phobos is neat but I heard not as good as the spartan, I have not used either yet. I was thinking maybe I should pick up some assault marines but something about a ton of marines running out of tanks towards the enemy is really cool to me. Though I am missing out on all the hammer of wrath hits the assault squad will give me. Does anyone use bikes? I need to fill up a 30k 2500 pts but I want them to work smoothly instead of clanky due to random units here and there. Any good fast choices I should look into, and how would heavy support squad with autocannons work as backing up troops?

Would the Leviathan dreadnought in drop pod be a good option?

I say this to just about everyone - get an anvillus pattern drop pod!

well, since 30k is a lot less "optimized" imho, first tip would be generally do what you think is fun and looks cool. in reguards to a storm eagle or spartan, I feel the spartan is the better move solely because with 2, the target saturation is there.

Get the ram, it's just so much stupid fun

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Man the decisions are difficult.. The ram does sound the most fun, but the drop pods special rules sound very interesting for assaulting. Recently I got to looking at the Laser vindicator however and I use to love laying down templates with 3 regular ones back in the day, or would that be the future haha? Now I can only field 1, but is the laser vindicator effective for offering heavy support for assaults armies? I was thinking autocannons on heavy support squad or else a couple rhinos with tactical marines for firing support possibly.

Orbital assault ROW is great fun. You will have to leave the tanks at home though.
