So I have not played a game of 40k in a couple years do to money and time to elsewhere and I thought it was time to maybe pick it back up. Though money is still tight, being a parent ain't cheap, I want to pick up a new army. I'm looking at Grey Knights but I have no idea what units to pick up or run though I have heard that dreadknights are awesome. Another option is turning to chaos.... Again I have no idea what would work there.

I like the idea of running a pure grey knight army and eventual add a Knight maybe a crusader for better long range options. Also could add some inquisition allies as well. But that is about as much as I can think of. Any helpful tips on buying options and unit tactics would be greatly appreciated.

I have a GK, Eldar, and Chaos army. All are pretty fun, and I dont run cheese lists on any of them.

If you go with GK and you plan on doing LGS matches, make sure to add 2-3 Dreadknights to your list. Everyone will likely be running cheese so you mind as well join the fun. Ive noticed running one, people tend to aim at the one and take it out ASAP.

I also run one libby and I believe it was 2 squad of termies and 2 squads of the jet pack guys. (sorry i havent played 40k in a while and cant remember the names).

CSM is also fun. I currently run a nurgle army and its nice because all the units are tough.

If i were to pick between the two I would say I like CSM better.

I've just gotten back into 40k as well and right now I can't be confident in suggesting models for any army other than Tau. I would suggest you change the thread title (hit "edit" on your original post, then change the thread title) to something like "What Grey Knight models for my new army?" or something a little shorter. That way you'll get more replies.

For GK's in this dex I would start with a librarian, 1-2 squads of terminators, two squads of interceptors, and 1-2 dreadknights. I highly recommend using the Nemesis Strike Squad formation from the codex.* Give the Knights personal teleporters and you have a great fast moving force.

You will see a lot of people recommending 3 knights and Draigo. I have personaly never used Draigo and at anything under 2,000 points 2 knights are plenty

*If you don't know yet the FOC has gone through some major changes. The short version is that you don't need to use any if you don't want to. The old FOC is now called a 'Combined Arms Detachment" and is one of a number of formations that can be used. If all of your army fits in to one or more formations they get the extra rules associated with that formation.

Termies/Pallies are great, Draigo is fun, Librarians are super good. Here's an awesome tip for GK: magnetize the backpacks so you can swap between Strikers and Interceptors; best decision ever! I only wish I would have also magnetized the Helmets so I could swap out White helmets for Purifiers, but oh well.

Buy 3 of the 10-man GKT kits and 2 NDK kits. Let's you build all of the good HQs and two full squads of GKT, plus the DreadKnights. That's a good start.

My favorite Grey Knight turn one tactic. Librarian with Liber and powers from Telepathy, odds of getting Invisibility are excellent. Cast Invisability on Interceptors then in the movement phase use their 30" move to jump them into range of a unit with no better than a 4+ armour save (and preferably in cover), and crisp them with two Incinerators. They are then nearly untouchable with only being able to be Snap Shot at, and being immune to template weapons. From turn two on it should be a cake walk to keep them in combat with the units of your choice.

Question can you cast Cleansing Flame from a Stormraven? Cause I really like the look of the purifiers on paper and I see on 1d4chan tactic page that them in a rhino plus incinerators makes a great combo. So I was wondering if you can do that with a Stormraven?

Termines are the way I want to go and I have only seen a couple of battle reports on youtube, mostly from MWG, where Interceptors made a real impact. I also wish I was a better modellor and I would magnetize because I had the same idea.

I also mentioned using a Knight, can someone like Draigo cast Gate of Infinity on a knight to help it get further up the board if need be? Also can you use sanctuary on an ally or just the primary detachment?

I see that GW has taken a lot of things off the website for Grey Knights, such as the Nemesis Vanguard force and I don't see a 10 man group of terms or am I blind?

No you can't Cleansing Flame from a Stormraven. They need a fire-point to shoot from. That's why Rhinos are suggested and not Razorbacks since Razorbacks don't have fire-points.

No, you can't cast Gate of Infinity on an Imperial Knight. Gate of Infinity can only be used on the caster and his unit.

GW only sells Grey Knight Terminators in packs of 5. But they're excellent packs and they have a lot of spare bits. If you buy 3 packs of Terminators, you can build 10 Terminators and use all the spare bits to make several excellent HQ options such as Librarians and Grand Masters with multiple weapon options (maybe even a custom built Draigo if you can find a spare Storm Shield).

Okay, then get of the 5-man GKT kits. And at least two of the 10-man PAGK kits for Interceptors and/or Purifiers.

What are some good unit/vehicle combinations for the GK? I am thinking that land raiders would be the best vehicle but dang are they expensive both money wise and point wise. I love to get a stormraven because I love the model and I think two of them would help a lot against flyers.

Good core could be
- Terminator librarian
- One unit of Terminators
- 2 x Dreadknight

I'm not sure if you were implying that you're rolling for 4 powers on Telepathy, in which case the Liber only grants an extra power on the Santic table. But even if you did roll without Liber, a 50% chance to get Invis is still pretty good.

Get:

2 of these http://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Grey-Knights-Terminators

and 3 of these http://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Nemesis-Dreadknight-New

Build up one box as normal terminators. Then use Two terminators from the second one and spare parts from both to make two Terminator Librarians.

Take 3 Dreadknights, season to taste.

Do whatever you want with the remaining three Terminators. That should be a good core.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

I honestly don't know if this is recommended (probably not) but my friend runs what he calls (and my local club now calls as well) Hammer Squadron, which is clump of upgraded Paladins with a Librarian, all equipped with daemonhammers or whatever they're called. They've managed to easily kill Knights, Stompas, WKs... They are far from a guaranteed win, but they're fun to play.

The best idea, both gameplay-wise and (in my opinion) fun-wise, is the Nemesis Strike Force. An all-teleporting army doesn't lend itself well to vehicles, other than a Stormraven, which is absolutely awesome.

So if I had the money for it, and its a big if, the Ghosts of the Imperium item on the GK GW page would be a perfect start?

Ha yeah, it's actually not terrible. The only less than useful unit there is the Dreadnought, and I honestly still have fun using them with my GK.

Ok bust on the lottery but everyone knows that is a scam -_-...... Always tax season lol. If I am able to get the Ghosts of Imperium might next buy be another termie group and a SS group pack. Also another dreadknight plus a stormraven should give me a good start from all the input I have received. Thank you everyone. I hope I can start buying soon.
