Lurking Gaunt

Hello everyone.
This is my first truly unified concept army, and so I figure the best way to keep my honest about getting progress done would be to start a PM blog, so I could keep track of things and visualize my own progress as I improve.
To start out, I am a graduate student, and because of this like to scrimp and save every penny that I can. To this end, I wanted to show myself, and others, that you can get great things through the second hand market to assemble your army with. I have recently purchased a large amount of Tyranids from here and elsewhere second hand, and want to share my journey painting/basing and such.
Currently the list of models is as follows:
Termagaunts: 88
Genestealers: 13
Warriors: 5
Carnifex: 0.75 (This is a job lot that I need to get new pieces for)
Venomthropes: 2
Zoanthropes: 3
Raveners: 11
Ripper Swarms: 3
Now many of you will look at this and say: "But Koreg, you have almost no synapse! However will you play?" The answer is simple, I'm not playing with this army until I get a decent section painted up, and I've yet to find a Flyrant or two at a price I like. I'm also on the look out for drop pods for a project for this army, mainly broken/messed up ones.
I'm by no means the best painter, and after looking at initial pictures of my test models, an even worse photographer. I'm attempting to remedy this situation of bad photos, we shall see how it works out.
Now, onto pictures of the test model I finished painting (but not basing) yesterday. It took about an hour total after priming to set this guy up. The glazing/blending that I've done on the scales isn't showing up very well on the pictures.
The basing I plan involves making it look like these are in/around a tide pool, and to do this I plan on eventually moving all of the models onto hollowed based that I give elevation with cork, and using water effects to give the look of tide pools. However one thing at a time.
As always, comments and criticism and tips and tricks are greatly welcomed.
Until next time.
Edit: Now that I'm done fighting with the gallery uploads, this should have a picture!

This is great... I'm subscribing to this to keep an eye on your progress!
I found that starting a paint log on here has really helped me keep motivated and get better with my own Tyranid hive fleet, good luck on your journey.
I like your colour scheme as well, good contrast between skin and carapace and eye catching colours. Have you used a wash on the skin at all? Tyranids have nice little details in their skin so maybe a dark blue wash to bring those details up would enhance the scheme?
Look forward to seeing your next update

@ Mad.. I used a Secret Weapons wash on the skin. I don't think it was picked up very well by the camera. I'm looking for my actual digital camera so I can use it instead. I did a thin dark blue glaze after highlighting to try to get everything to blend a bit better, then washed in SW.
@Cleatus Thanks!
As requested the current group I'm working on, until it's warm enough for me to prime outside. Hopefully this weekend I can get some Raveners or warriors primed.

Ah right, all good on the wash then.
I had issues with photography of miniatures for ages as well, I have ended up using my smartphone under natural light and is giving me pretty decent photos now.
Keep chipping away at those gants... will take a while to get through 88 of them

Finally getting around to painting. Graduate school is super busy, so I've been painting to relax in between writing sessions for a fellowship.
Pictures a bit better, a touch blurry though. Used a real camera, but no tripod. Likely too close to the model.
Without further ado, two ripper swarms for this month's painting contest. Painted, but the basing material hasn't come in the mail yet!

As someone who has painted ripper bases with only five rippers on them.... well done on this, I love the look of what you have done.
The yellow tongues add a nice touch.

I'm getting my water effects today in the mail. So I'm going to spend this week attempting to do water splashes on cork. I'm hopeful I can get it to look like the rippers are rushing out of the surf.
Anyone have any useful advice/tutorials on working with this stuff?

I've started playing with water effects. This stuff is a lot of fun. Need to figure out how to make the peaks bigger, and see if I can drybrush in peak tips. Which means it's time to order basing materials and hollow bases.
I've also finished a few more models.
I did a warrior with a heavy venom cannon (I think)
I tried to get a glow effect for the barrels, but I don't think it turned out very well.
Now a group shot of the growing swarm!

Never used water effects myself so can't help you there, I've found youtube to be really helpful when trying to work with new techniques.
Yip that is a venom cannon on the warrior... looks good! Glowing effect on the barrel, try using a little bit of pure white drybrushed in the centre of what you are trying to get glowing... I found that worked for me with my Exocrine I just finished.
Nice little group shot there as well, looking forward to seeing your swarm grow!

I'll be honest that when I read this my expectations were well lowered but the actual models are fantastic. You are being way harsh on yourself there. I was blown away by all your models, the only critique I could make is that I personally am not the hugest fan of the bright yellow tongues. Would the nids really evolve something which can be seen in the dark? But your general quality is great and I def look forward to seeing the progress

@JustALittleOrkish - Yellow tongues on Nids.... works perfectly, just close their mouth until it is time to eat, and by then it doesn't matter if they can see you

I tried using purple on their tongues, but it just ended up blending in. So all of their "internal" workings are a nice lime green. Hence the devourer glow!
Thanks for all the positive comments!

It's been a little while since my last update. I need to take pictures of what I've finished since my last update and my current project. Working on a hive tyrant. Tricky bugger, which is only at the blocking out colors stage.

Ok picture time!
A pack of raveners!
A pair of warriors that I've had up and have been touching up when I get bored
A venomthrope that I spent a lot of time working out the gradient's for when I work on my hive tyrant
And the tyrant I'm working on now. I'm working on blocking out the colors on all of him before I put any details in so I can make changes if I don't like something.
As always comments and critiques welcome.

Mmm that red/orange gradient on the carapace of the venothrope is excellent. Loving the use if the florescent green too.

I wanted to test something on some minis that some art friends had recommended for facing, namely underpainting. This is a theory in classical painting to create "zones of the face" I followed this as my main placement of underpainting. I also did this on all 3 normal base coats using Vallejo Surface Primer in Black, Grey, and White.
So I broke out the trusty Elegoo Mars and printed a bunch of heads, scaled some 32mm mini heads up 250% so I had space to work with, drilled them out, pinned to some tooth picks and got to painting. I didn't want to spend all week working on these minis so the final results a little messier than I would like but I think overall a good experience. Not to mention I got to practice doing eyes.
To start here are all of the finished heads!
Here are the heads I underpainted. I basically tried to follow the more detailed version of the picture above with some areas of overlap to allow for some transitiony areas.
Below are some side by sides of the different base coats comparing the normal methods (left side) and underpainting (right side).
