Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

Just finished the first episode, and I reckon this show is off to a very strong start. Production values are very solid, the lead Tom Ellis as Lucifer (yes, that one) was excellent and the writing was for the most part very slick with plenty of humour, but also plenty of hints that later episodes might get properly dark. I've not read the comics the series is based on, but judging it purely as a TV series I'm definitely hooked. Seems to be somewhat similar in style to Constantine, which is very encouraging.

Anyone else see it? I highly recommend it if you have Amazon Prime and 45 minutes to spare. Only thing missing was the Rolling Stones' 'Sympathy for the Devil'

Hate to break it to you, but that's actually a Fox series in the US, and isn't on US prime (it's like 25 bucks for the full season)

The commercials had me interested, but I haven't watched the first episode.

Ah, fair enough. The way Amazon had it listed it looked like one of their Original Series ones.

We watched the first episode, it was fun so we'll keep watching Not a comedy but definitely lots of funny parts in a show that can also be "serious" and we like that kinda thing. I didn't know it was based on a comic book though, just read about that.

Watched the first two.

Yes, it's based on a comic. So did Constantine ("Hellblazer").

Lucifer Morningstar taking a vacation from hell started out as a storyline in the "Sandman" stories by Neil Gaiman. Neil has given his blessing to the performance of Tom Ellis, too.

Of course they are gonna take liberties with the material (which is no bad thing). I just hope it doesn't turn out like Constantine - and get shot down by the loony religious nuts in the US (because there isn't a good record on shows featuring the prince of darkness in a less than evil role).

I do hope though that it takes a turn more towards the supernatural later in the series. The odd bit of spookiness aside, the first two episodes have basically been cop dramas, plot-wise. There are hints that it will go in that direction eventually, though, so I'm not particularly concerned that it'll be dumbed down yet.

I've seen the first episode, and I liked it, but I'd be surprised if it got picked up for a second season from what I've seen. Good acting from the guy playing Lucifer, but not from anyone else. Of course, maybe it improves from the first season.

I haven't read the comics, but I have read Sandman so I'm familiar with the character in this specific context.

I watched it, and I'm fairly impressed.

That's not really what killed Constantine. The show made the same mistake as the movie, focusing on stereotypical Bible stuff when the source material is much much broader and more Lovecraftian. It had a really weak myth arc (that was super predictable), and actors who just didn't seem to have good direction. The series wasn't good, the ratings weren't good, and there wasn't any interest in another season. The moral guardians haven't been in a place to shut something down through simply outrage in sometime.

I'm enjoying Lucifer too.

As for Constantine yeah, it was more due to lack of good I feel that it got shut down. Oddly he was much more likable when he turned up for an episode or two of Arrow. I liked the guy playing Constantine, just not the series direction itself.

I've watched all 3 episodes out so far and I quite enjoy it.

A lot of uber right wing fanatics will say it's glorifying Satan and is some kind of gateway into hell. These are people who a) haven't actually watched the show, and b) if they have watched it and still think that then they have a fundamental misunderstanding about what the Bible says in regards to Lucifer in virtually every way.

The reality is that the premise and characters have far more in common with Greek mythology a la Zeus and Hades than they do with anyone from the Bible. The ONLY thing that is similar to anything having to do with the Bible is the name Lucifer.

That said, I enjoy the premise and execution of it.

Constantine felt like it wanted to be the next Supernatural (Seasons 1-3) and died since we've already done that. Episodes are played daily now. It did nothing new, despite having the ability to.

Lucifer... I think the biblical Dexter angle is going to get old fast. Season 1 should be entertaining, but I expect them to blow their wad early and any following seasons will be dry and already hashed out. Bar killing the Detective of course, but then it's just a repeat and dry in a different way.

i just watched the first episode and boy. Being a Christian, this show is kind of a surreal experience On the one hand, they did marvelously in casting the character. This guy is great, and the writing is both charming and utterly frightening all at once. As amazingly entertaining and human as the character seems, he's positively unnerving.

More than anything, I think I'm disappointed they turned this into yet another quirky police procedural. I mean really? You have a show about the bloody devil being a charming fellow, and thats the best they could come up with? It just really feels like reaching for the lowest hanging fruit.

It's what now, four episodes in? Lady cop better give up the doubts about him telling the truth by the end of the next episode or the denial will be too much. She's already showing cracks.

Based on last weeks preview after the 4th episode she's starting to believe. Though how much that'll backslide when he actually bleeds will be interesting.

And I don't feel like it's entirely a police procedural. I feel like that is a subplot that's there while we explore Lucifers transformation. And in a way it makes sense because it shows his difference of opinion quite starkly with what we consider moral.
