I am liking the old 80's style D&D look and feel of Frostgrave and am curious to know what (besides the main rulebook, d20's and downloadable sheets) is needed to start playing. I mean this mostly in terms of miniatures as I have a fairly good collection of terrain. I'd like to be able to run a two player set up to begin with so that I can try it out with a family member or a friend to begin with.

Many thanks.

Each player will want two spellcasters and at least 8 other figures of some kind.

The rules assume humans, but there's really no reason why you can't use dwarves, elves, or whatever. It's up to you how WYSIWYG you want to be, but figures with a variety of weapons would be useful to differentiate members of a warband.

In addition to the Warband (the exact make up of which is up to the player) there is a random encounter table in the main rulebook. It includes things like undead, animals, monsters, etc. I think it might be a copyright infringement to post the actual list here, though.

If you have a bin of D&D minis you are pretty much covered though. I love Frostgrave it's fun elegant in it's simplicity and just complex enough that every game is different.

You will need miniatures for your warband. At least a wizard, and up to 8 other miniatures depending on what characters you want in your warband.
Aside from that you will need a bunch of figures for the random encounters and stuff your wizard can summon.
The random encounter table includes the following creatures:
-Skeletons
-Armoured Skeletons
-Zombies
-Ghouls
-Bears
-Boars
-Giant Rats
-Ice Spiders
-Snow Leopards
-Wild Dogs
-Wolves
-Small Constructs
-Imps
-Ice Toads
-Ice Gorillas
-Medium Constructs
-Minor Deamons
-Snow Trolls
-Worms
-Werewolves
-Wraiths
-Vampires
-Frost Giants
You don't need to have miniatures for all of them to start with, you could just reroll results for creatures you don't have, but having miniatures to represent all encounters goes a long way to having everything you need for Frostgrave.

You could also use models you already own to stand in for things on that list.

The box of plastic Frostgrave Soldiers gives you 20 guys for £20, so that and something to represent the wizards and apprentices would be a good start.

A while back I put together a spreadsheet of all the different henchmen and creature types that are needed. This is up to date based on the available books:
