Been Around the Block

Hi all just wanted to ask a quick question
I'm off to Warhammer world this weekend and may be playing on one of their gaming tables (not a tournament just a friendly game) and in the rules it says that all models must be painted and based

I expected this but has anyone been before and tell me to what standard we're talking about? Unfortunately my speed of painting is terribly slow and so I rarely have a finished army I'm thinking of taking my khorne bloodbound

If I just slap on some red brass and skin tones with a quick base would that be OK? Basically leaving them all at first stage of painting

Cheers for any help

You should be absolutely fine.

As long as your models are assembled and have a basic paint job you shouldn't have any issues.

It's to avoid hordes of bare plastic, half assembled minis all over their lovely tables.

Obvioulsy the gaming hall is still an advertisemnet for the hobby so they prefer to have painted models being used but not everybody has the time to paint up full armies so base coated should be no problem.

Great thanks for that
I took too long painting up Archaon before realising I'd run out of time to paint the bloodbound

This is absolutely not enforced.

They care minimally if you leave your stuff lying around in heaps, in the way (floor) or deploy by dumping literally piles of minis onto surfaces.
They do not complain if your miniatures are unpainted. Nor comment, make you feel unwelcome, or stop you.

Exception: If a large section of your army is not GW, you will be asked to put it away.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I game there as my FLGS, I've had games where the opponant used snapped ankles on bases to represent figures. The staff do not stop this.

Tournaments there? I've been pulled up on not rimming my bases correctly (having a monochrome silver base).

Daily gaming? Let's put it this way, mate of mine ran a 15K unpainted army there in early February. Nobody batted an eyelid.

Oh right fair enough I've never been you see so had no idea on how strict they were

I might still undercoat to force myself to actually finish an army haha but I won't break my back doing it before I go

When I've gamed there (albeit 18 months ago) they didn't mind; the gaming area is pretty much unsupervised. I was using a few primed items, and I've seen lots of bare plastic.

I would recommend you get onto their website and book one of the good boards though, as there aren't many and if you just turn up and play you might find yourself on a bog standard 6x4 realm of battle board or a waiting list.

I saw entire, pure plastic unbased model armies the last time I went there. It might be a policy from up on high the corporate ladder of GW but I have NEVER seen it enforced by any members of staff there and I've been there atleast 10 times with unpainted models of my own. It would be bad for business and just plain mean-spirited of them to kick people out for their models quality, and all of the staff there are generally nice people.

Edit: Just make sure you're using GW models

"The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does. That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer!" - Khârn "The Bloody", First Captain of the World Eaters

On the one or two occasions that I've been there, the staff don't even visit the tables - I think they're asked to stay in the store area. We asked them to help us with getting our game started (new to playing so rules questions would be plentiful) only to be told that they couldn't stand over us, though we could approach them for clarifications etc.

My point is, don't worry as they'll likely not pay any attention to you (in the nicest way possible).

The only possible exception to this is if one of the web team / bloggers are doing the rounds, as I believe they check for anything that they can photograph, though again I doubt they'd be bothered by unpainted minis.

Yeah, the tables are run by the store staff, though the tables are outside the store so I doubt they get the time to monitor them. They'll deal with problems and bookings but that's about it.

The staff will usually only circulate to collect glasses, change booking signs, and if a load of kids come in they will make sure they all get tables where possible and don't have issues.

Also a couple of errant non-GW figures in your case/force won't cause any issues. I've spotted historical figures, micro machines, etc here and there, and a lot of stuff is heavily converted. As long as it's discrete, nobody will get up your chuff.

Openly unpainted/pirated recast stuff? That would get you kicked out.
Afaik nobody has ever been asked to leave for unpainted armies. There was even a (free) event recently where forces were not required to be painted.
Paid events? Painted only.

When I went to play for the first time this month I was surprised at the amount of grey plastic on display... on the flip-side there were some beautifully painted armies.

On a side-note, always pre-book a table.

I know they have lots of weekend tournaments coming up.

Last time I went up there to play Epic I had converted a witch hunters super heavy out of a model of St. Paul's cathedral put on tracks for a friend's army.

Got a lot of "Whoah cool" looks from the staff. Same went for the Bile Thralls as Flamers in a Nurgle daemon army for 40k
