Yay! Somebody else likes Skarbrand!
There are a few things to think about. If you're going to run Skarbrand, you're almost certainly going to deepstrike him. So it's useful to have an instrument on another reserve unit or two, to ensure he comes in turn two. I'd argue that an icon (preferably khorne) is important too, for accurate deepstrike. I think you're on the right track to pair him with the murderhorde or the flayer troupe. The trick here is to deepstrike him turn two, right behind your tidal wave of daemonettes or hounds, which then charge the same turn. If possible, it's best to deepstrike him close enough to your own units to buff them but not close enough to enemy squads to do the same (which is stating the obvious). Daemonettes and seekers are a good choice here because they have high initiative, and so even if the enemy also get the rage/hatred buff, you will probably strike first and the damage will be done by the time they can strike back. If you're running the flayer troupe, the greater slaanesh locus (?) might be a better choice for the herald than beguilement, because you already have 1st turn rerolls through skarbrand. Similarly, if you run the murderhorde, the khorne herald might as well run the lesser locus, because the Skarbrand renders the other locii redundant.
For all of that to work though, you might need a skull cannon to tag enemy units before the charge. Otherwise, if you charge through terrain and the enemy are buffed by Skarbrand, you'll be obliterated. As said above, if you're going to run Skarbrand as a beatstick, you'll need grimmoire, invisibility or cursed earth to keep him alive for that turn of shooting between deepstriking and assaulting. Your wave of daemonettes/hounds/seekers could tie up some enemy squads in cc to prevent them shooting. The great thing about Skarbrand is that he will likely kill either a wraithknight or an imperial knight on the charge before they can swing back; not many units can do that. The crux, of course, is actually getting him into assault. Which is hard.
TLDR; use him to buff a flesh hound or daemonette bomb.
