Excludes all Grenade Launchers and targeted vehicles (except open topped with unit embarked)
If an enemy unit is within half the maximum range of a thrown grenade. Both units roll 1d6. A result of 6 for the defender is an auto fail.
Attackers wins or Ties- Grenade hits
Defender wins- Roll snapshot to hit attacking unit.

So a Grenade thrower within half max range needs a 5+ to auto win a Grenade Throwback

So it makes Eldar immune to even the rarely thrown grenade attack?

Also how do you 'win' an initiative test?

Meh, maybe I was thinking of different test. I'll fix it.

I was probably thinking of winning a hit&run roll off now that I've thought about it for a minute lol

Not a fan of this rule. It wouldn't make sense for Tyranids or Khorne Beserkers or Daemons to use this rule but it would also be an unnecessary nerf to exclude them from it. If the rule doesn't make sense inclusively then it probably shouldn't be a core rule.

Doesn't seem like a very good rule purely because of how little grenades are actually thrown.

Its a proposed rule.... kinda what this section of the forum is for. And it's more for realism... might as well take away things like rapid fire because it falls under the same principles of realistic based actions.

Generally it's better to add rules that serve a purpose rather than bloating the rulebook further. For example adding a rule that allows charging from outflank but at a penalty.

I can agree with that logic. Just finding it hard to walk the line of adding things because it's worse then presidential politics. Got left wingers and right wingers and how they feel about it, so I just went with something based on realism as it does occur in the books more then a few times

I am not sure adding a rule that'd make the rarely-used grenade toss to begin with a worse idea is a good rule.

The only time I throw grenades is if I have a squad with a Lightning Claw dude, simply because he doesn't have a pistol anymore.

First off, grenades have no reason to become even worse. Most players I know don't even use them outside of assaulting.

If you are going for realism, who is to say that a space marine, eldar, etc. isn't skilled enough that he times his grenade throw so that it detonates on impact or mid-air? How do we know that all grenades in the 40k universe are timed? Do some grenades specifically explode on impact? There's just too much going on to say that a grenade even can be thrown back.

If any sort of rule like this is to be instituted I'd go for more of a martyrdom style move. On a successful leadership test a model may throw themselves on a grenade, auto wounding and possibly increasing AP, while also ignoring cover. Plus this one would make sense for more of the races, such as a tyranid having the basest of instincts that "this will kill a bunch of us" and being smart enough to protect the swarm.

At least Astartes grenades can be set to detonate on impact, and usually are.

You know that throwing grenades back is an action movie thing, right?

Grenade throwback is only possible in video games and movies. In real life, a soldier who would stumble upon having a grenade at his feet would jump out of the way or kick it away from him, with very little chance for survival. ©

Grenades don't work in a way that you could reliably throw or 'kick' them back. And even being a cool kid eldar won't help.
