I recently decided to give
AoS a spin and after much scrutiny have decided that the scourge privateers are going to be my focus.
That said the realm reavers warscroll seems very small and there are not alot of scourge privateer models to choose from. I figure this means I will be either be forced to just keep adding to the few units allowed in the warscroll or add units from outside the subfaction.
As mentioned, you can keep making the units you take in the Warscroll larger or take a duplicate of the same Warscroll. There's also adding things from outside of the subfaction.
For example, my Dark Elf army was primarily Corsairs with a smattering of other stuff(a War Hydra, a significant amount of Cold One Knights, lots of Assassins, and some Dark Riders). Now I can split it up into a Realm Reavers(well, if I get a Kharibdyss) warscroll battalion, add in some Shadowblades faction stuff, and then some Ordo Serpentis.
Are you even able to take units from outside a formation/warscroll and still gain the benefit of the group?
You can take units from outside a formation/warscroll battalion with no issue. They will not benefit from the warscroll battalion's benefits unless it's something like "The Super Cool Guy in charge of this Warscroll Battalion grants all friendly units within <insert X distance here> the ability to reroll Hit/Wound rolls of <insert number here> or ignore Battleshock Tests or whatever perk that does not specify the Warscroll Battalion only gains the benefit".
Age of Sigmar has a really simple set of core rules, with the units themselves providing the "complexity".
And if so, does anyone have any advice for pairings with the scourge privateers?
Shadowblades faction. Dark Riders and some Assassins.
