Subject: New to AoS - considering Seraphon

So basically, I got into wood elves right at the end of 8th. But due to uni and the amount of work I had going on, I really didn't get to play much at all (I think I managed 2 games ). Now I have a bit more free time and I am looking to get into AoS: also my partner has expressed an interest in playing which is really awesome. Only problem is, she wants to play wood elves...
So, now my wood elves have been stolen, I'm looking to start a new army! I'm loving the look of Seraphon and I have always loved the lizardmen models but don't know much about them in terms of how they play. Would they be a fair match up against wood elves (or wanderers as they're now called)? Can anyone give me some pointers on the best units to get started with Seraphon? Any advice would be awesome, thanks

Start Collecting box seems like a no brainer if you like Seraphon.
All the unit rules are free in the app so you can read and buy what seems cool to you.
There's no rumour of new Seraphon models. It looks like we'll get small faction releases under a Grand Alliance rather than the typical large army release.
The way AoS is built encourages you to look at building a force outside of a faction/race name. Why not mix and match the two and swap units between games? Or buy what looks cool and take turns picking and deploying (like a school sports team).

I play quite a bit of seraphon. I think most would agree they are the most versatile army of any age of sigmar armies. Their two heroes, Slann and kroak, are some of the best in the game. Also for the wounds those gave you way more spells then comparable wizards in other armies.
Chameleons are the best assassins in the game. They pop up anywhere in the board, no restrictions. The bastiladon with the solar engine can shoot 20 inches and isn't affected by rend and can roll against mortal wounds.
They have infantry and cavalry. They have some more dinosaurs and stuff too but they really are a good army

As for being a fair match for wood elves, it really depends on how you build your list. I mean if you go super cheese you could take lord kroak, 2 slann and the rest bsb to buff magic. With 30 models it has the potential to do something stupid like 70 mortal wounds a turn, and has great survivability. However, your partner is like to split up with you after the first turn!

Awesome, thanks for the replies all
Ok I will definitely look at grabbing the start collecting box. I downloaded the app so now I have been able to look through the war scrolls. The bastiladon looks cool, I do like the Stegadon as well though so, not sure which one I'll look at getting first. Are skinks a good pick for ranged attacks? Looking at their scroll I can give them Javelins or Boltspitters, though the range isn't that great on the Javelins even with a slightly better roll to wound. Chameleons do look very good indeed so they're probably a better option?
I definitely don't want to go the cheese route, yeah that won't end well
I think I'm still adjusting to the 'no restrictions - take whatever you want' kinda thing, which is cool but just different to what I'm used to.

Welcome to the game!
As a long term(?) Seraphon player I may be able to help you here.
Ok I will definitely look at grabbing the start collecting box.
Fantastic value, do it.
The bastiladon looks cool,
The one with the 'solar engine' is generally considered one of the strongest options. So a great choice. If you are playing against woodies a lot it will hurt them, so if you are concerned about power/cheese id built with the cool looking snake bit. Its pretty underrated imo.
I do like the Stegadon as well though so, not sure which one I'll look at getting first.
I love this in the game (with a bow). Some long range attacks, half decent in combat. Just a all round fun unit (plus looks cool).
Are skinks a good pick for ranged attacks? Looking at their scroll I can give them Javelins or Boltspitters, though the range isn't that great on the Javelins even with a slightly better roll to wound.
Skinks these days are pretty dire, but I tend to use 1/2 units with boltspitters when I do - you can equip them slightly better for combat (club+spitters) and the range is a big deal. Sadly I think Javs look better tho!
Chameleons do look very good indeed so they're probably a better option?
These dudes are one of the best units in the book ( imho). Grab some. Plus, they are cool.

Really depends on what kind of style you like playing, Seraphon are a ton of fun and are very versatile. Whether you want to run offense, defense, or even straight assassinating/sniping.
Before you can really get into the models you should buy you have to know what you want to play. I also have also found that Seraphon are a very expensive army to play because of the summoning that can be done and all of the different ways you can configure the army.
What I have so far:
- Lord Kroak
- Starpriest
- Skink Starseer
- 3x Kroxigors
- 40x Temple Guard
- Eternity Warden
- 6x Ripperdactyals
- 1x Engine of the Gods
- 1x Stegadon
1x Dread Saurian
1x Carnavor or troglidon ( i haven't built it yet and haven't decided what i want to make it)
10x chameleon skinks
2x Astrolith Bearer (proxy)
Want list
1x Bastiladon
2x Astrolith Bearer
1x Slann (maybe)
This list give you a nice variety to play defense with back-line sniping/assassin support. I am not saying I used all of this in my games but this is a pull I can choose from.
Here is a Seraphon forum... the people on here are awesome and super helpful, I joined when i started my army.

Cool thanks again for the replies. I think I will favour chameleon skinks over regular skinks. And thanks, I will check out that forum
I went ahead and bought the start collecting box. It may well be that warriors and knights are not the strongest units but I still like the models so was happy with getting that box to start with. Only thing now I guess is to decide on the build for the carnosaur. Looking at the scrolls the old blood looks better imo than the scar vet.

If synergized correctly warriors are a great offensive option. Look into the formations before you construct the carnosaur, so you can be sure to make the correct one.

I had forgotten about this thread, and posted elsewhere, but maybe a set of eyes here can help me with something...
I was just helping my wife with her first purchases for her Seraphon, and noticed that SCGT and PPC seems to have wildly different valuations on Ripperdactyle Riders. Can anyone speak to the value of the unit? If I am reading correctly, they functionally have re-roll to hit and wound, essentially at all times, with no downsides, amongst all their other perks.... but I feel like I must not be seeing the big picture here.
Thanks!
