Hi,
Basically in trying to build a fun/competitive 1k Tyranid list, we'll play 4x4.
I have access to mawlocs, hive tyrants with wings, the entire troops section, carnifexes, haruspex, the bio cannon one. A drop pod. The psychic brain dudes of all types. Genestealers.
Gonna buy a 1k army with the list already set in stone and paint it up.
What would you do with a blank slate?

No... they really are not. Unless you're running skyblight, which forces harpy-tax upon you, there is basically never any reason not to upgrade one to a hive crone for 20 more points. Main problem with this is it lacks a synapse anchor for the termagants. The flyrants are going to be roaming around ahead of the army, and the termagants are just going to turn tail and run as soon as they move out of range. If you want to keep a walking component for your army, then you need a tough synapse unit to hold it together while the flyrants do their thing. A Malanthrope is perfect for this job, but is a forgeworld model. Alternatively, you could drop the termagants and use deepstriking rippers for troops. Fewer points, good at grabbing objectives, and being out of synapse doesn't bother them much. They just sit there happily eating each other while they hold the objective.

How does this sound then?
2x Hive Tyrant with wings and shooting weapon bits
33x Termagants with Devourers
1x Termagant, different from the rest
4x Tyranid Warriors, 3 with devourers and 1 with a stranglethorn cannon
1x mawloc

Well illegal as written. Assume you mean 34 guants in a 2x22 or 2x11/1x12 then a bit better but warriors are not a good anchor for that many broods. Automatically Appended Next Post: Gribbly swarms with Psychic support: 997
HQ:
2 Flyrants with 2x devourers 460
Elite:
1 zoanthrope 50
1 Zoanthrope 50
1 venomthrope 45
Troops:
15 Termie (6 devour, 9 flesh borer) 84
15 Termie (6 devour, 9 flesh borer) 84
15 Termie (6 devour, 9 flesh borer) 84
Heavy
1 Mawloc 140
Going to assume you have the option for a Venomthrope as hey are in the same kit as the zoanthrope. They can be a life saver for your unit on turn one, unless you want to mess Void shield generators, you would need to down grade a pair of devourers to fleshborers and swap it for the Venomthrope.
VSG is stronger turn one against ignores cover, the VT can bring cover along with it till it dies.
The Zoanthrope are the synapse anchor for your list, and support units. You should have 8+ d6 points in your pull to power things along. While we don't have the cool powers of other codex, after you get used to them the hive mind powers are really strong (just don't use our warlord traits).
Catalyst Paroxsym to keep things alive
Onslaught gets you in shooting faster
Psychic scream is brutal if you can get in range
Horror and Warp Blast are opportunity powers, but not make plans around them.
Dominion is a backbone power, if you have nothing else to through dice at keep domion up for the fearless bubble.
I play lists like this both in fun games and competiive games. Barring DE armies, it usually does pretty well.

depends on your meta, the haywire of the hive crone and rerolls v flyers is nice, but in my meta no too many people run a lot of vehicles of flyers, and the blasts do better for me, ymmv of course, but really with nids the only way to be competitive is to counter your areas meta because of how low they are on the power scale

Competitive 'nid's revolve around maximizing flying Hive Tyrants and looking for ways to make up for their lack of scoring potential.
1. Competitive 1000 point Tyranids (995)
Hive Fleet Detachment
HQ
Hive Tyrant, wings, electroshock grubs, 2x twinlinked devourers
Hive Tyrant, wings, electroshock grubs, 2x twinlinked devourers
Hive Tyrant, wings, electroshock grubs, 2x twinlinked devourers.
Troops
Mucolid Spore Cluster
Mucolid Spore Cluster
Mucolid Spore Cluster
Mucolid Spore Cluster
FA
Hive Crone, cluster spines
Elite
Venomthrope
Three flying Tyrants puts out a lot of damage at 1000 points. The Crone gives you an extra flyer and is rarely not able to contribute. You have almost no ability to score objectives without landing flyers. Tactics are to deploy the flyers in a bubble at 5.9 inches from the venomthrope, jink if you go second, and fly around killing things. Once you have killed everything that can threaten the Tyrants, you land, claim objectives, and assault anything that is left on the table. You have enough haywire to punish the guy who brings knights or a land raider, enough shooting to kill most stars that can be built at this points level, and only really suffer against Wraithknights and the occasional Tau player who brought skyfire on everything.
2. Fluff 1000 point Tyranids (990)
HQ
Tervigon, electroshock grubs
Troops
Tervigon, electroshock grubs
Tervigon, electroshock grubs
Termagant x 30
Termagant x 30
Elites
Venomthrope
Venomthrope
Venomthrope
Three Tervigons and 60 gaunts is fun. Vemoms keep you alive, electroshock grubs help you deal with vehicles. This won't win any tournaments, but it will be enjoyable to run and is very fluffy.
You can also mash the two lists together to get a reasonable 2000 point build: cut the Mucolid's, and 30 Termagants, move the HQ Tervigon to Troops, and run 3 one model venomthrope squads. (Three squads of 1 lets you spread out more than 1 squad of 3 at the risk of giving up first blood easier).
