I personally love Maelstrom, but I totally understand all of the complaints about how a random bad draw, or nearly un- achievable and random, non fluffy objectives can throw off the game. So I've been thinking about changing Maelstrom to a custom deck that provides random tactical changes, but also promotes meaningful tactical thinking and achievable points. So here's my thought, draw from a deck of:
Offense
Defense
Tactical
Army Specific
You draw one card for the turn with several related objectives each worth 1VP and achieving every objective gives you a bonus for the next turn, you cannot draw from the same deck two turns in a row to promote the ebb and flow of battle and to stop one person from totally hunkering down or gun-lining. I'm thinking for now 10 cards in each deck, here's a sample from Offense.
13- Break their flank
Their flanks are weakly guarded, take advantage by crushing their soldiers and their spirits
1- Pick the side (your right or left, within 24” of board edge) that has the fewest units, score a VP for eliminating a unit on that side
2- Take the objective closest to the board edge that is not currently under your control- 1 VP if you control all objectives
3- Pick a side (your right or left of your deployment zone) score 1 VP if you have more scoring units within 6” of that table edge than your opponent
If all objectives are completed you may choose the side 1 unit arrives from outflank from or +1 -1 to reserve rolls next turn.
Think it's worth making a whole deck to try out?
