Welcome back.
Drop pod Salamanders should play pretty much the same as they used to. But there are a number of new way to build your army. 7th is all about formations. You get free rules and bonuses just for taking certain combinations of units. One that looks to fit your play style is the battle demi-company.
Captain or chaplain
3 tac squads
1 Assault option (bikes/speeder/assault marines etc)
1 Dev option (dev squad/cents)
(optional) one dread
(optional) Command squad
I like to run that as a stand alone 1,000 point list. Give you enough points to spread some gear around with full tac squads. You could run 5 man ones and include some of the optionals. Good for a fun game.
For larger games it makes for a good launch point for the “decurion" style list, where you have one big formation containing a number of small ones. As a Salamander, you have two options, the Flameblade (from the Angels of Death supplement) or the Gladius (from the main codex). To qualify for these you need to take an auxiliary formation. For smaller games, a 10th company taskforce (consisting of 3+ scout squads) does the job. Larger games can bring the 1st company TF (3+ vet squads of any flavor).
The Gladius also opens up the Full Company style list, where if you take 2 demi-companies, you get an extra bonus: all your basic transports are free. This turns them into the ultimate MSU list, where you spam more scoring units and light vehicles across the table then your foe has time to kill. Very strong in objective games.
