Hi all,

I was in FLGS yesterday buying some Malifaux bits, and ended up buying my 7-year-old son a box of three Warriors Of Chaos. Now he wants to collect more pieces. He doesn't fancy the AOS starter box as it's too big apparently, so I was thinking of a couple of other units from that faction. Or I could get that for him as a Christmas present but I have a feeling I'll end up painting most of them. Is ebay the way to go?

I have never played WFB of 40k so I apologies for lack of knowledge. I've found the free AOS rules and warscrolls but there's nothing in it about army building rules. Is it literally a case of 'anything goes'? Do units all move independently now? Can we use 30mm round bases? What would form the minimum for a playable army - a couple of units of ten plus a couple of heroes?

Thanks in advance.

Have you seen this sort of mini starter set?

For Age of Sigmar, it really is anything goes, and it doesn't require using any army building rules. However, there are rules in the General's Handbook for building forces, including point values.

You can use any bases you want, as technically you measure everything from the models rather than the bases. Though I imagine a lot of people as a house rule probably measure from bases as it seems easier.

By default, AoS doesn't really have any army building rules (anything goes, as long as your opponent agrees). However, there is a separate book called the General's Handbook which has point values for the units, as well as more restrictions on what units you can take.

If by units moving individually you are talking about movement trays, AoS doesn't use them. As long as the figures end their movement within 1" of another figure in its unit, you can put them in any formation you want.

AoS technically doesn't care about the base, whether it is square or round, since measuring is done from the model - but the models do have a standard base size. Chaos Warriors use 32mm round bases now.

AoS can be played with as few as one model per side, but it might be a bit simple. I think a good size to aim for would be one hero and two or three units - roughly the size of the Start Collecting! boxes. There is a smaller starter box called Storm of Sigmar which has a really tiny number of units, but I'm not certain how it plays.

The small Storm of Sigmar starter set is basically the best introduction to the game. It comes with (I think) 5 Stormcast Eternal models and 8 Khorne Bloodbound models, full rules, Warscrolls for the included units, dice and 4 custom missions focused on the included models.

It's a ton of fun.

From there, I'd buy The General's Handbook, which is 25 USD and adds in points and army list building rules as well as a ton of additional scenarios.
