I have been thinking about the guards ability to blob the infantry squads from a platoon and i had a thought about maybe using a combat attachment system like the one in flames of war. so special weapon and heavy weapons squads could be broken up and distributed to the infantry squads in a platoon. with limits like one special and one heavy weapon per infantry squad. so a limit of having a minimum of three squads before you do this. Also it replaces the blob rule.
Combat Attachments
- If a platoon has 3+ Infantry squads you can combat attach out the members of a special weapon squad / Heavy weapon squad the platoon command and infantry squads of the platoon. You may only have one special and one heavy weapon team attached per Platoon Command squad or infantry squad.
- You must combat attach all the members of a special / heavy weapons squad.
- While using this rule you cannot use the combined squads rule to merge the infantry squads of the platoon.
e.g. a platoon with a PCS, 3 infantry squads with no special or heavy weapon, SWS, HWS combat attaches out the SWS and the HWS to have 3 infantry squads with 12 men, 1 heavy weapon team and a special weapon and the PCS.

This seems like a complicated way to do it, why not just write a variant platoon wherein you don't get special/heavy weapon squads and your base infantry squads are larger and can take more upgrade weapons?

I think the biggest problem here is that the use of it brings to glaring obviousness the issues of 40K, and the problems with Imperial Squad setup. Four Heavy Weapon Teams in a Squad would be nice. Four Special Weapons in a Squad would be nice. But then you have seven to eleven models protecting them, but tend to be rather useless in hitting most of the targets of those Weapons.
Still, it would make those specialist Squads a bit more survivable than they are now, and I cannot disagree with that. Right now, those Special and Heavy Weapon Squads are too vulnerable as their platforms are too easily Wounded, have a Save that 90% of the Weapons in the game can bypass, and have few numbers to compensate for them, and that isn't considering the charlie foxtrot that the Heavy Weapons Team model is.

I'm more asking what the difference between saying you've got three ten-model squads that can purchase a heavy weapon team each and a three-team heavy weapon squad that can detach a team to each squad, and saying you've got three twelve-model squads that can purchase two heavy weapon teams each is.

My comment was directed at the OP, not yours. Your entry was not in place when I started typing.
The OP is talking about the possibility of having the option of either having the option of an Infantry Squad and a Heavy/Special Weapon Squad separate, or an Infantry Squad with four Heavy Weapon Teams or 5 Special Weapon carriers (and 3 extra Lasgun carriers).
They aren't separated like the old Wolf Guard and Royal Court. The Attached Squad joins in their entirety.
