Hello, I'm returning to 40k after a long "break" and I'm wondering what the hell chainswords do? Do they have any benefits in CC; and if not isn't it better to take a bolter on your sergeant instead? I have been unable to find anything about 7th edition on this even though this has been talked about to death in the past.

AKA: Should I run my Tactical Sergeant with a Bolter instead of Bolt Pistol and Chainswords? I don't mind the look change as I have leftover Sternguard Bolters (with the circle drum mags and sling) that look extra fine. .

Thanks

It is a close combat weapon, so if your sergeant has bolt pistol and chainsword he gains +1 Attack in close combat.

A model with a pistol and CCW gets an extra attack in melee. A model with a pistol and a bolter doesn't. I'd say I'd rather have the range of a bolter, instead of an extra basic CC attack, but that's just me. Doubly so if you buy a Meltabomb "just in case" a suitable target comes by, because you're down to 1 attack anyhow.

In most cases, I'd spring for the Combi-Weapon, but that's personal preference. Or a proper CCW, if it was an assault squad or something.
