So I have been trying to figure out what legion I should go for in the Horus Heresy. My problem is that I love the Iron Warriors as they fit my personality but I hate their colour scheme. I also love the rules and the primarch of the Thousand Sons, however I love the colour scheme of the White Scars. Would it be acceptable that I paint my army as White scars call them Iron Warriors but use Thousand Sons rules? It sounds pretty sketchy but I really dont know what to do.

...There's technically nothing stopping you but it's a very weird thing to be doing. If you can't be bothered to pick one and stick with it you can either use the Shattered Legions rules or an allied detachment (to mix and match Legions) and/or have a bit of one Legion that happens to be a different colour for some reason, but saying "These are my Iron Warriors, who happen to be made of White Scars models and use Thousand Sons rules" is just going to be confusing.

I'd personally recommend digging down a bit into why you like each Legion and seeing if you can't come up with a middle ground that's only one Legion with a normal or slightly variant paint scheme, but it's your army.

First, the 30k section is the next section down, might get more answers there regarding legion.

My general response to these things is “your models, your rules; whatever floats your boat”. But I think the 30k guys like a little more historical accuracy.
