Are whirlwinds (regular, not scorpius pattern) viable in 30k? I don't think I've ever seen them used in any battle reports, army lists, ect. I'm considering an Iron Warriors army, but I want to focus on infantry, dreadnoughts, assault vehicles, and tanks. I want to run Hammer of Olympia very aggressively, rather than have a typical gun line army. I like the idea of a squadron of whirlwinds as a super cheap harassment unit, while tanks and infantry do the heavy lifting, so to speak.
Does anyone use them? Are they even worth considering, or are they often overlooked for a good reason?

If you want to go with arty I'd suggest the Iron Fire RoW, but if you're sold on Hammer of Olympia (that's my choice as well) I'd go with Quad mortars to be honest. They are more versatile and are better than whirlwinds, coming in at I think relatively the same cost when upgraded with frag & shatter shells.

Basic ones are essentially useless, even in fun games.
While they are cheap, the damage output is less than poor.
There are soo many units that do the same job a lot better that the whirlwind just becomes a paperweight.
If your running one, use the scorpius.
It's vastly better at the job with more viable target choices.

Take the scorpius, quad mortas, and medusas instead.

Basic Whirlwinds? No. Scorpious Whirlwinds? Yes.
Or go the really cheap way and take Rapier Quad Mortar's and give them Rad Shells.

Iron Warriors want what others have said - Quad Mortars (Shatter, Phosphex), Medusas, and Tyrant Terminators. That gives you lots of ranged nastiness.

no you can get the "40k" whirlwinds, they are under the Legion Artillery Tank Squadron coming with 2 types of missiles
but like most people said, they perform worse than comparable units

Def with larger games, go with the ten man squad of tyrant siege terminators with a siege breaker to confer tank hunter to the termi squad and open up phosphex for the the mortars. This is cash money.
But for smaller games the Sorpius isn't bad.
For only 115 points its a bargain for 1 + d3, s8, ap 3, barrage, blast,coupled with iron fire isn't a bad option.

It's 30k, so yes their viable. There are certainly better options, but unless you're playing in tournaments, they can find a use.
