There seems to be legion dreadnought talon. That's the type of dreadnoughts used in 40k as well right? Are they any good in 30k or worthless? I have couple(well 3. One needs new arms though but one is BA dread box mint so hopefully has enough spare bits) 2nd hand BA dreads I was considering of clipping BA symbols and turning into SoH dreads but not sure how good idea that is. Bit of tough job(especially for the metal one...).

They can take a Dreadnought Drop Pod, which is a very good thing to have. But I think the Contemptors have better weapon selection and durability for a bit more cost

2 weapons make the ole boxnoughts worth a look: Flamestorm Cannons and Graviton Guns. Flamestorms dropped in next to large groups of Infantry tend to cause a few palpitations and Dreadnoughts with two CCW's and two Graviton Guns make quite a cheap and effective vehicle killer. When dropped in with a Leviathan, they tend to get ignored letting you cause mischief

I see people running box 'noughts in ZM to great success with the aforementioned flamestorm cannon and a chainfist (run a melta gun or graviton gun to your preference) - giving the flamestorm cannon shred and having the chainfist for other dreads and doors is epic. No invul save, lower armor and wep/basllistic skill but in ZM that's mitigated by the limited firing lanes for units.

Outside of ZM I was thinking of a pair of box dreads in drop pods (legion) with 2xCCW & grav guns and a pair of hunter killer missiles each in an orbital assault rite of war, but at the end of the day - go for the cortus contempter if in normal age of darkness games, and in ZM take your pick.

my 2 cents

The Cortus-Castaferrum debate may come down at least a bit to what the other guy's running; the Cortus may have better front armour, but it's got worse side armour and its shield only provides the save against attacks from the front. If you're fighting someone who can approach from a different arc easily (Raven Guard, Alpha Legion, Emperor's Children, Sons of Horus...) or if you're planning on going forward and getting stuck in you may need the Castaferrum's 12 side armour and lower cost more than the Cortus' tougher front.

Another thing the basic Castaferrum chassis is good for is cheap AA; it's 30pts cheaper than getting a Contemptor-Mortis, and does the same jobs about as well.

The cortus has the ability to overcharge itself though, which can be quite useful.

Even if you don't like the Talons, regular Morris dreads are pretty viable. If you don't want to get Dread Pods to get hem close, why not convert them up as Morris? Better than leaving them doing nothing!

EDIT - Mortis, not Morris! Power Sticks could totally count as DCCW, but I'm not sure you'd be able to find little bells small enough for the conversion...

I think in in smaller games boxnoughts have a place contemptors soak up a hell of a lot of points after all but at 2k and above they will get wasted pretty fast.
