What if WS worked almost exactly like BS? WS4 hits on a 3+. WS6 hits on a 2+, rerolling to a 6+. WS9, 2+ to 3+.

The one difference I would make is that, if you are double your opponent's WS, you gain a +1 to hit, and they take a -1 to hit. The main thing this would effect is Tau vs. WS4 dudes-the Tau would hit on 6s, the WS4 dudes on 2s.

I don't think so.
I'd rather both ranged and melee to-hits worked more like strength vs toughness.
This would require the adding of an 'evasion' stat or similar, essentially how easy a unit is to hit at range. You could then incorporate cover into evasion modifiers, meaning cover is no longer useless for well armoured models and bad armour is no longer useless for hidden models. Maybe squad sizes could even affect it...

Not exactly an answer to "What if..."

Would it break balance?

It would make the game run a lot faster and WS would actually mean something.

In my home brew I used that. At first people play testing were apprehensive when they were all "What about my WS7 super melee dudes vs Tau WS2 dudes. I told them to look at the chart. WS 7 Vs WS 2 is a 4+ just like pretty much every result that is higher.

By switching to working off BS system you only need the information on your models stat line to hit and you don't need to compare it to a chart. Less chart checking the better.

Once they played a single game they were convinced it worked much better and smoother. Every units WS needs to be readjusted though. WS2 (Guard Tau) if they shouldn't be in melee. WS3 (most everyone) if they can function in melee. WS 4 if they are built for melee (Eldar melee centered units, melee focused characters) WS 5 very VERY rarely (Avater of khaine, Swarm Lord)

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Maybe even say WS1 for Tau (WS0 for Riptide/Stormsurge?).

Tau are already hitting Marines on 6s and being hit on 2s under this revision, and they hit anyhting worse on 5.

Riptides should NOT be WS1-they're perfectly capable of fighting.

The Stormsurge I could see an argument for WS1, though, and possibly reduced to 0 while anchored.
