I've started a small, loyalist, Emperor's Children collection, but am having some trouble deciding on which characters to use. The current narrative I have gone for is that whilst Nathaniel Garro was fighting alongside the Emperor's Children towards the start of the heresy he encountered a small contingent of the legion who were having reservations on the whole heresy thing and fled with Garro. Im wanting to buy a second, centerpiece character to be the figurehead of my army, but because of the fluff i have created I don't have an obvious choice, and as I don't know the fluff very well, why not ask the internet eh?Obviously my fluff rules out the Emperor's Children characters, what models would you guys recommend? (rules do not bother me, I play exclusively for fun)

Current Collection if that helps give you the theme:
10 Legion Tacticals - Rhino
10 Legion Tacticals - Rhino
10 Legion Tacticals w extra CCW's - Drop Pod
10 Legion Support Squad w. Apothecary
2X5 Legion Heavy Support Squads
10 X Tartaros Terminator - Land Raider
Dreadnought
Chaplain.
Garro
Company Command in MKIV

There are two characters you can field - Rylanor the Unyielding Venerable Contemptor Dreadnought, and Captain Saul Tarvitz. You'd need to convert Tarvitz, but the Emperor's Children Contemptor Dreadnought would make a good Rylanor.

A Company Champion is handy if you want to use the Maru Skara rite of war.

I'd suggest combining two of those Tactical Squads into a single 20-man squad (and perhaps bulking the remaining squad up to 20, too). Put the support squad and the command squad in a Rhino instead.

Shattered Legions would be a good start for you, if you wanted to do Loyalist survivors of Isstvan III ... Shattered Legions lets you put together an army of serveral legions.

I support Rylanor. The books tell us about Tarvitz' death, but Rylanor is just listed as 'fate unknown'.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

Cheers for the great ideas guys. Definitely gonna go for a dread and a captain. Torn between expanding my anti-vehicle by getting Rylanor some buddies or with some tanks of my own.

I thought we only thought he was dead, cause he was on Isstvan's surface during the second bombing. Loken survived, couldn't Saul?

Onto your question, 20-man squads are heavily supported in 30k, so give that a shot. A champion would be excellent with a command squad, or those tartaros cause of their sweeping advance. Very fluffy too. But a named character, I'd go with Saul here.

Ill give the 20 man squads a bit of a go.

Son's of the Fallen collection will be...

20 Legion Tacticals
10 Legion Tacticals w. extra CCW's - Rhino (expanding to 20 in future)
10 Legion Veterans - 2x Melta - Drop Pod
9 Legion Support Squad w. Apothecary - Rhino
2X5 Legion Heavy Support Squads
10 X Tartaros Terminator - Land Raider
(possible 10 man assault squad or land speeder/Javelin squadron)
Contemptor Dreadnought talon. 1 Regular Contemptor, assault cannon, CCW, 1 Venerable,Volkite and CCW
Chaplain.
Captain ST - Converted Artificer Praetor
Garro
Company Command in MKIV w. Company Champion - Rhino

I love the story of Rylanor, so in games where it makes narrative sense for him to be present the venerable will represent him. Where it makes less sense for him to be alove the Venerable will represent my loyalist successor's reverence of Rylanor's sacrifice. As a successor chapter won't have a focal figure like a praetor, Tarvitz is the brave Captain that saved their lives, Rylanor is the martyr-esque figure revered by all. and Garro is the figurehead and centerpiece.

Adding some extra marines to bulk the tactical squads, some veterans, some dreadnoughts and a couple characters is a great expansion for now. thanks guys. My next expansion will probably focus on heavy support or fast attack, but that wont be til after ive painted up this latest addition

Just double-checked. I thought we had confirmation that Lucius killed him, but apparently not.

I'd have thought they'd send Garro looking for both if both were there, so if he's alive he probably got off the planet somehow (Morturg escaped, maybe Tarvitz came along for the ride?).

I'm so unbelievably ready for a triumphant return of Saul leading some blackshield Isstvan III survivors. But one can only hope...
