Hi, I love the 40k story and history but I've never played it before. I want to start a chaos space marines army, but I don't know what I need besides a HQ. Can anyone tell me what I need to start an army?

If I were you I'd find a local store and go in for a demo game and hang out at the store. Get a feel for the game before purchasing anything. Then get a small squad of something build and paint it before committing to anything else.

Also, be advised brother, new BRB and such coming in a month or so. So I wold advise on waiting for all that to drop before jumping in!

I'm not sure how many stores are in your area but it may also be a good idea to go to each one and check out the local scene some stores like it competitive and some like it casual. Find a group you like and stick with it!

The current minimum requirement for an army is one HQ and two troops units. For Chaos Space Marines that would mean either Chaos Space Marines or Cultist is any combination you like. From there it can get complicated. Because depending on you HQ choice some other units (elites) can become troops. But the basic answer is Marines and Cultists.

As far as learning the game; finding someone to teach you is great. If that is not an option than I would start with the Dark Vengeance starter box. Which fortunately for you has Chaos Marines in it.

But there is something important to consider. the 8th edition of the game will be out possibly this summer. If that happens the rules in the starter book would be obsolete. And we really don't know how different the new rules will be. So it is risky to do unless you really want the miniatures. I would not buy the Chaos Space Marine Codex until we know more about the direction of the game.
