G'day!...so, I've been wanting to have a go at this for a while now, and it's finally happening
My goal is to take the glottkin, remove part of the tentacle arm, and part of the mouth/cannon arm, and sculpt some big meaty hands on there instead...one holding a big rusty cleaver, and the other, currently, is going to be holding a huge staff/standard/walking stick....so far, I've got it 2/3 assembled just standard, and I'vescratchbuilt the cleaver, and I'm partway through building the staff...and I've done some "3D sketching" with blutack, as a bit of greenstuff practice before I just dive in
here's a pic in it's current blutacky rough-sketch glory...what do you guys think so far?
(I did a rough fist sculpt on the cleaver hand, didn't bother trying to blend that in with the arm really, as it's just temporary...and I didn't bother with any hand detailing on the staff hand, it's just a blob to hold the staff in place...also, obviously all "danglies" on the staff are just placeholders )
Automatically Appended Next Post:
well, I went ahead and chopped the ends off both arms...I've just thrown on some quick blutack hands again to double-check...I feel like it's going to work ...assuming I don't screw up the final greenstuff sculpting too badly that is
(again, the final, greenstuff hands will actually include details, and be blended in! - this is purely rough shape concept work, just to help me see the end picture more clearly )

thanks guys
...done a little bit more work on it today...one thing worth noting: greenstuff is a fair bit more difficult to sculpt than blutack ...it's a lot more resistant to small sculpting efforts, and yet, a large piece of greenstuff can be all too easily shifted out of shape, while trying to sculpt small details...realising this, I've sculpted one hand, the one holding the cleaver, but I've left it a little rough and basic for now...and I will go back to it after it cures and build up the finer details on top of the base hand sculpt
...aside from the hand, I've added a supporting "bone", made from glued-together sprue, to the other arm...because I'll have to sculpt not just a hand, but a good inch-or-so of arm before it...so this should hopefully both make it more stable and easier to work with, and save me a bit of greenstuff
...also, I've made a start on the top of his staff/standard/thing...decided to make it look like it was all tied together with rope or string of some sort...I peeled the jacket off a piece of electronics wire, and used the superfine copper wire, twisted up a bit, and just literally tied it all together...fairly happy with how that turned out...hopefully it will still look "right" when it's painted...
righto, that's it for now...oh, and in case you were wondering, the staff, and the cleaver handle, are both just made out of sprue...trim all the lumpy bits off two lengths of sprue, and glue them together by their widest surfaces...when the glue's set, just scrape the whole thing down vigorously, to remove any obvious straight edges, flat surfaces, and any rough bits/lumps...you can also not bother gluing two bits of sprue together, and just use one...just scrape it all smooth...I did the double-sprue for this, because I needed some good, solid poles for the staff/cleaver handle of this size ...I'm sure this would work great for making rustic, simple fences, cages, signposts, etc...basically for free too, assuming you keep your sprues

allrighty, so I left that greenstuff'd hand overnight to cure, and I've just gone back to it with some fresh greenstuff and added details to it...think this hand is pretty much done now...what d'ya think?

Looking good! Is the colour difference between the layers of gs just due to drying times, or is there another reason?

CommissarKhaine wrote:Looking good! Is the colour difference between the layers of gs just due to drying times, or is there another reason?
thanks, and yeah...the different colours of greenstuff weren't planned or anything, just different mixes, and brands of greenstuff...
the darker green is some "generic" greenstuff I bought on ebay about 2 years ago...I think it's getting a bit old now, the yellow half has a bit of a "skin" on it, which breaks up and leaves little hard chunks when you mix it together, and probably results in a higher concentration of the blue part in the mix, resulting in a darker, bluer green...it's pretty ugly to work with honestly.
...and the lighter green is some GW brand greenstuff, which is also probably about 2 years old, but it was in a sealed blister pack, which might've kept it "fresh"?...either that, or GW brand greenstuff is actually just a better product...because that mixed up perfectly smooth and lump-free, and so was much nicer to work with, and probably resulted in a more even mix of blue/yellow...so, more of the yellow part than I had in the generic greenstuff mix, leaving it a lighter, more yellowy green.
...so, I'm now using up the rest of my generic greenstuff on bulk, base structure sculpting, and then using the GW brand greenstuff over that to do all the detail work...because it's so much nicer to work with

thanks
...alright, little more progress...I got the base structural sculpt done for the other arm/hand...it's not pretty...but it does show what I was talking about in my previous post about the greenstuff...this is the old generic greenstuff I was talking about...see all those little yellow lumps through it?...yeah, try sculpting fine details with those buggers lurking all through it...not fun!...anyway, I'll leave that to cure at least partially, then I'll mix up some of the fresher GW greenstuff, and start adding details to it, like I did with the other hand
...I mean really...just look at this gak I've been working with! no wonder I've done only a few tiny bits of greenstuff work before now, if I thought all greenstuff was like this!

Are you milling it enough? if its old or if it was the ribbon type it could be the edges that are touching curing in the package. i never really have that problem especially after a good kneading, and im using like 3 year old gs still

it's the ribbon type, blue on one side, yellow on the other...I assume it's just a case of, it's just old/cheap stuff that's gone a bit stale, if that's a thing that can happen to greenstuff...I always trim out the strip down the middle where the blue and green touch...but with this stuff, the blue half is fine, but the yellow half seems to have hardened slightly on it's entire exterior, giving it a thin, tough "skin"...way too much of a pain to try and shave that skin off all sides of the yellow part, and you could knead the bloody stuff until it sets, and you won't get rid of those broken-up bits of yellow "skin"...
it's fine though, iirc, it was bloody cheap, and I only have about an inch and a half left of it now anyway, and it's fine for any simple, bulk structure work...I've still got about 6" left of the GW greenstuff too, which I know works fine, so I'll have no problem finishing this project

Yeah personally id trim the center off of both sides, then store them separately. if you need more green stuff after you go through the 6 inch of GW stuff, id look into kneadatite GW stuff is repackaged that stuff. its cheaper too for the amount you get.

hmm...I was just going for big fat stumpy sausage fingers...but, looking at it again, yeah I think you may have a point there...right now, the fingers only really appear to be jointed at the hand...it could probably use that second row of knuckles...probably won't bother with the third row though, the fingers are just too fat and stumpy for that...but yeah, some fairly subtle second knuckles should probably happen

ok, think I'm done with the build now...finished decorating the staff, went around and filled a bunch of gaps, and sculpted more knuckles on the staff-holding hand, to make it look more like an actual hand
still figuring out a base for him...will probably just match the rest of my nurgle daemons - wet mud/filth littered with milky pale yellow/green puddles...maybe some cork rocks filthed up nicely as well, and a nurgling goofing off here and there...there'll be some nurglings on him too, but I'll paint them separately and glue them on afterwards
...righto...next step: priming!...then...oh boy...the paintjob! this is going to be a mission!...so many pustules!
