When I bought a ton of metal Terminators five years ago, I also got a ton of Grey Knight Terminator left arm bits, about five Incinerators and about 8-10 Bolter arms.

I won't make a Grey Knight army, so I've been trying to figure out how to use the bits. They won't fit plastic termies, but they'll fit metal ones. I've found good prices on eBay for unarmed (pun intended) termies or squads with unarmed metal termies. However, the only right hand metal Terminator bit that doesn't have a gun of some kind are arms with Thunder Hammers.

Thus my question, is it possible in 7th or 8th edition to bring Terminators with Thunder Hammers and Storm Bolters? Or Thunder Hammers and no Storm Shields? Is there any crucial reason why I shouldn't?

No idea what 8th will bring.

You might want to take a look at 30k. They have different gear options over there. 40k is kinda picky...

If like me you prefer the look of thunder hammers to most powerfists i know personally i'd have no problems with an opponent saying 'this unit has powerfists but hammers looks better' and just count them as powerfists. I wouldn't try it at tournaments but in casual play as long as you make it clear at the start it shouldn't matter.

Except captains and librarians i don't think there's anyway to bring hammers with storm bolters though.

Grey Knights - 3500pts
SKitarii - 4000pts
Ad mech - 2000pts
Imperial Knights - 1000pts
Black Templars - 3200pts
Genestealer cults - 1750

In 7th you have the choices of:
Two Lightning Claws
Thunder Hammer w/ Stormshield

That is it, has to be one of those two.

In 8th edition, who knows?

Probably will end up doing this. Now to decide which Space Marine Legion to go with...

Currently the only way to get any SM a thunder hammer but no Storm shield is as a character unless you play Grey Knights (Daemon Hammer) or Space Wolves.

SM, BA and DA are all restricted to that paring and Chaos can't have thunder hammers at the moment.

But as Kataklysmic said, if you play them as "count as" power fists reasonable players should be fine with it.
