Let me start with the introduction, the question will be down at the bottom in bold if you just want to skip to that. Anyway, hello everybody! I am new to Dakka and I consider myself relatively new to Warhammer. I've been interested for about a year now and my entire collection consists of a 7th edition rule-book set, 3 novels, and a small codex assortment. I am a huge fluff-junkie and my future army will largely just be collected for collections sake, I don't really plan on gaming that much. I have reached the point where I consider myself competent in the lore enough to start collecting an army. A few days ago I was sitting down and considering which faction and then sub-faction to pick and I was struck with an idea. The factions will still be canon, Ultramarines and Imperial Knights, but their story will not be. So this brings me to my question:
Is it common for people to write their own narratives and backstory for their armies?

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

IceAngel wrote:I must say Knightley, I am very envious of your squiggle ability. I mean, if squiggles were a tactical squad, you'd be the sergeant. If squiggles were an HQ, you'd be the special character. If squiggles were a way of life, you'd be Doctor Phil...

Welcome! Always nice to meet a fellow Ultramarine player. As for your question, I would say yes, it is fairly common for players to come up with their own spin on a faction. There is actually a 40k background discussion forum on dakka if you want to kick some ideas around to see what people think. Also, if you;re so inclined, you should consider sharing pictures of some of your painting work in the P & M section.
Cheers!

Welcome! Nothing wrong with writing your own narrative; I'm doing the same right now with my next army-building project. Best of luck with your collecting!
