So today I was thinking about how much 8th edition changed and phased out the coders I haven't actually bought the new "index" yet but I am planning to purchase it very soon. Before I commit though I was just curious about a few things I play mainly dark Angels have for about 3 years now they have been and are my primary force over the years I have wanted to build and paint some ally's I.e. Imperial fists so I can take the units I didn't have access to I.e. Centurions sternguard vanguard blah blah blah. But with the new index release are all space marines just marines now? How does the force organization really work? I'm not expecting a huge page by page detailed explanation but if I were to paint a squad of the marines mentioned before in dark Angels colors would they be able to be ran with my dark Angels or do I still need some kind of ally captain force org? Appreciate the read dakka!

Essentially within the index there is a list of Space Marine units that you may take as part of a Dark Angels force, in which case they adopt certain rules and roles depending on the unit. All fall under one detachment or more, structured according to what units you have, and they can be allied with other space marine models because they all share the 'Astartes' keyword.

Currently there is little difference between the different chapters. There are a few Chapter specific units like Grey Hunters, Deathwing, or Death Company, and some characters only buff certain chapters, but that's it.

Dark Angels have special rules, unit restrictions (no centurions), special psychic powers, and all their unique units:

Yeah. The great chapters have special rules and special units. The only that have lost something are the "not so great" first founding chapters. Salamanders, Imperial Fists, Iron Hands and White Scars.
The chapters tactics weren't as relevant for the ones with their own codex because they have much more relevant things to be different.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

Rumor has it Stormca....I mean Primaris Space Marines will be the first Marine Codex. So you can still play your regular Space Marine army. But to GW, you don't exist unless you start a Primaris army.

Yeah the idea of the primaris etern..... Marines worries me that no more love will be given to my dark Angels unless the lion finally wakes up in which case they are probably screwed cause either A he's gonna be crazy from luthers betrayel or B he's gonna be pissed about what his legion became. I was just hoping the imperium would finally share its centurions with us or that GW would release some sort of new primaris Deathwing or Dreadwing as some of the 30k books I was reading refer to them. I'll most likely wait a while longer before buying the new index or codex or whatever it's called now till I can get a better handle of what's going on I'm still upset I JUST bought fall of cadia and the primarchs rising books than got sneak attacked by 8th edition figured I had a bit more time.

While a second founding chapter, Black Templars have always been a fairly popular one. Are they still kicking around? Didn't see them on the covers.

Yes, they still exist, as do all the others (the Blood Ravens even got a mention in the Index), but they're just "Codex-compliant Adeptus Astartes", like everyone else except BA, DA, SW, DW and GK. Though they do have Helbrecht, Grimaldus, the Emperor's Champion and Crusader Squads. (Helbrecht is actually good now.)
