Been Around the Block

The Nurgle stuff is just plain horrible. I can not get over it. GW lost my fantasy dollars forever with AoS; I'm no longer bitter (HA!) but I will never play a single round of that game. I had high hopes for 8th but I'm not seeing it just yet. I'm focusing on the Death Guard for this rant. Only the Death Guard. I'm not getting started on Numarines, Crawl, or Girlyman. Woof. On to the Death Guard. Why do all of the units/characters have terrible names that echo their fantasy counterpart in AoS? I realize that AoS was simplified story wise for a younger market; I understand that 40k must be simplified as well to survive...BUT...in most editions of 40k a Nurgle Chaos Lord was called just that: A Chaos Lord of Nurgle. Or a Captain, Commander, etc. So now we have the Lord of Contagion...ok not bad, no gun...the axe is ridiculous stupid...but whatever, its ok. But then we move on to the "Noxious Blightbringer" and the "Malignant Plaguecaster". Why not a Chaos Sorcerer of Nurgle? Wouldn't a "Blightbringer" be noxious by definition? They sound like MtG creature names to me, and while those were rad in 1994...they don't seem nearly as cool now. And the model for the sorcerer (yeah I refuse to call it a Malignant Plaugecaster) is the worst model GW has produced, ever. Who ever signed off on the draft of that sorcerer should be in deep noxious blightbringer by now. It looks like a sick fat baby man with a giant spoon hurling vomitous gruel at something. No bolter, no plague knife, nothing to say I'm a space marine but his backpack. And why the strange "beard"? If that's a beard. Or a tube? It looks horrible. This model is, to me personally, a message from GW. A message that says feth you.
The Actual Plague Marines are pretty good BUT: plague grenades are not potato mashers. They are human skulls and heads. And about the champion...what exactly am I looking at? And do all the death guard have bolt guns? Some appear to hold bolt pistols...maybe they're the same for DG in 8th?...The blight drone seems fine, needs a better paint job...wait it's called a "Foetid Bloat Drone" Thank the Chaos Gods they didn't use the Non-foetid bloated one...UGH.
I can not take this seriously enough to suspend my already stretched beyond belief disbelief and believe that GW is not going to make this into a game I don't want to play anymore, and a universe I don't care to visit anymore. The only way I would spend 1$ on 8th edition is if they released a proper and awesome chaos space marine squad with proper equipment and options and armor mk's. Then I would buy one squad and the rulebook...I have a plastic "helbrute" (why not a "Raging Hell-Brute) and some bikers ("Speeding Death Wheels") laying around...

I mean, yeah. That model is horrible. I haven't seen anyone that thinks it's good, so it surprises me as much as you that it actually went into print. Maybe the 3d render looked really good?
The naming is a little silly, but hardly something that's gonna ruin games.
And this guy looks awesome, imo.

Edit: yeah the sorcerer's face is a little off, nothing a little converting wouldn't fix.

Yeah, nothing a good scythe won't fix either if you are not a fan. That sorcerer is a couple of conversions and a decent paint job away from being a good model IMO. Even with not being a fan of models being mid-shooting etc

Funnily enough the sorceror and cultists were done by a different sculptor.
Overall I think they look great, when you see them in the flesh.
I will be making some modifications.. especially the sorceror.

Kinda silly if you need to pay and work conversions to make supposedly "best miniatures in the world" look like a good model though. Especially when pricing is like ferrari of miniatures. If I buy ferrari I don't want to have to work on it to be a good car!

I think the sorceror looks pretty cool, apart from the staff. His bloated form is really nurgle-y, and that distorted baby-face is pretty disturbing. Replace the staff with something more intimidating or disturbing and he will be perfect.
Chaos miniatures should be weird, distorted and disturbing, that is what Chaos is about. I think these DG miniatures do a fine job.
But to each his own. Not everyone likes the same things, and aesthetic preferences can't really be discussed.

I got the impression that was meant to be symbolic. i.e. Nurgle standing at his cauldron stirring new diseases.

I think the DG models shown by GW suffer from a terrible paint job mostly. Just like their Nurgle Daemons and fantasy-Nurgle-models before. All of them are simply too clean. They do really have gruesome details - but it seams nobody wantd to paint those or use some of GWs own technicals to let them shine. Some blood, typhus corrosion and nurgle's rot will solve these problems.
The models themselves are great, especially the marines. They combine aspects of Plague marines from all eras, though mostly the awesome forgeworld conversion sets. What they lack in maggots they make up in bells. Admittedly I'm not a fan of bells everywhere. Bells for the bell-throne it seems.
Nurgle models have always been equipped with wooden weapons, even their bolters had applications that were shown in wood color and already the icon bearer from 3rd ed had a wooden staff.
Agreed, those new models are over the top. 40K always was, though. It's just that model creation developped and makes those "overdetailed" models possible. If you don't like that sorcerer - convert it. It's a plastic model, shouldn't be that hard.
Btw. concerning names: In 7th ed. GW stopped translating unit names into other languages - we have ridiculous/ unfitting unit names because of that in germany for years .

But.. these tend to be names that have been used in the fluff to call them that in the lore. They tend to be called a Nurgle Lord only on the tabletop because of that whole generic thing going on.
Do you really think that they don't have pretentious titles in the fluff?

What really makes that sad is that the paintjob is very clearly done by someone that is incredibly skilled. Those clean and crisp colours are really hard to pull off.... and they just don't suit it at all.

This.
It's not even the green tones - it's the way they've handled the flesh tones and how clean and crisp everything is, right down to the metal. My own Death Guard use a similar scheme but as you can tell...end up much grimier and dark in tone.

So you never bought a car and put after market parts on it? I have a buddy that just bought a $70,000 Corvette and then spent another $15,000 on after market products to make it look that much cooler. So yeah buy the Ferrari and then go ahead and spend a little bit more to make it look that much more "BAM" on the table. I'm just glad they made them all plastic, wish they would just stick to plastic, resin is pain to work with and almost impossible to bit crash, imo.

I agree with a lot of the criticism on the DG models.
1. Too clean, no grit.
2. Over detailed to the point of obnoxious.
3. The Sorc looks silly not Nurgly.
4. Too many bells....and I like bells...but too many!
5. The flames and spell casting modeled...not my fav.
6. The Pox Walkers...again more silly than gritty.
They are well sculpted as far as quality, but did not capture DG, imo.
I just posted my newly painted PM's, in the showcase forum, and hope the paintjob I used will look good on these new models.

I think the models have nice concept and here and there, awesome parts (not the sorcerer, the is plain horrible, unfocused, has a bad pose and weird proportions), but I think there was a moment in their design the sculptors were supposed to stop, but they continued adding details and spikes instead. Compare with Forgeworld. https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-CA/Death-Guard-Conversion-Set

Generic characters disappearing? Elite units of your army losing options and customizations? No longer finding that motivation to convert?

Personally I don't like the new models much at all. There are a few good Plague Marines. The main lord is pretty slick. The pox walker/zombies look daft and the Chaos sorcere is by far the worst model in the entire new box.
I'm even making a Nurgle-inspired Chaos Marine force, and I was pretty excited when I saw Death Guard were going to be released. Now? Not buying a single one of the starter box models.
I do agree wholeheartedly with the stupidity of GW naming conventions - and that's been creeping in all along the product line. Really ham-fisted "trying too hard" silliness. The entire AOS Khorne line is one of the worst offenders.
"Here's my second unit...the Bloodbathing Slaughterfestival Mourningblood of Bloody Dripbloodering Brutalizers...." fething atrocious, and not a single person can defend that stupidity.
I can see it now on the Chaos Space Marine command barge.
"Very well, Morax. Deploy the bloat drones."
"...Sire?"
"The bloat drones. Send them in. Full attack."
"Sire, do you mean..."
"For Horus' sake, the "foetid" bloat drones...you assclown."

I'm loving all these models and will just convert the small details I do not like. (Baby Face is first to go.)
I think my beef with nurgle paint schemes at GW is the INSISTENCE that things need to be nearly a neon green in color tone.
The forge world stuff goes off nicer because they have a more diseased look rather than a bright green paint scheme.
Like this:
With death guard I always find it easier to base coat them as......DEATH GUARD. Then corrupt them. White armor, green secondary, brass details.

The guard will never be anything but the guard and even if the new names took you still wont stop third party manufacturers making compatible parts.
Hell chapter house ensured they can never stop third party companies from making parts, it may of burnt that guy out but he did the conversion comunity a big favour.
