Ugh. The portals are kind of a nice touch, but wow does that ever look like an uninspired re-skin.

Surely every branded variant could be called that, though?

This would not be the first board game I bought with zero intention of actually playing it, just to cannibalise the components for other games

At very least the Mario version of Monopoly got a little attention specifically because it so dramatically altered many mechanics in a thematic way, as a recent example.

This looks like a cash grab, and I expected a bit more from the R+M brand, honestly. It looks like they're just slapping some random quotes and crowd pleasers down.

Looks like the scale creep is pretty extreme compared with the rest of the line.

My wife and I collect various themed Monopoly sets (also by USAopoly) and most are just re-skins, though they typically have very fun text added to the Chance and Community Chest cards that are thematic to the set. The exception is the Wizard of Oz set. That one actually added new game play mechanics which were a lot of fun (land on a railroad and a tornado picks your piece up and takes you into Oz (center of the board) where you get a special benefit and then can exit out of any other railroad space.

Seems like a tough balance to strike for these themed sets, though. If you add too many new mechanics you are fundamentally altering the base game, which I am sure there are limitations on since Clue, Monopoly, Yahtzee etc. are classic games that have well-known and easy to follow rules.

That's fair. I guess I just have a hard time seeing the appeal, since I don't find the core mechanics exciting enough to warrant a remix (especially not after the games have been around for ages and modern board games have generally evolved quite a bit), and in that faith to the original, they tend to be closer to reskins, at which point I don't see how that's anything but a cash grab.

I guess I'm obviously not their market.

This is for the Rick and Morty collector or teens who may have never played the original. Defiantly not for someone that wants an exciting game play experience.

I love the show, probably my favorite thing currently but I seek more interesting game play, even if its lite. So will pass on this but good figs.
